I just picked up a customized M-58 that's been parkerized and had what looks like a model 57 barrel cut down, recrowned and the ramp front sight machined down to a profile similar to the original. what I am curious about is the serial number is S256xxx but it has a totally different 5 digit number stamped on the crane. Shouldn't at least part of the serial# be stamped there? Thanks for any clarification anyone can give on this. if anyone is interested I can post a picture or two .

Did you buy it on Gunbroker? I saw that one.

That other number is just used for tracking during manufacturing. My M58 , SN # N153XXX has a different number 94898 on the crane too. And it's definately NOT a parts gun.

Covered here as well. http://smith-wessonforum.com/s-w-hand-ejectors-1896-1961/206688-serial-number-question.html

Yes it was the one on GunBroker out of N.C. . My intention is to use it as a cold weather off duty gun and a field gun.

And thank you all for the the information.
