Excuse me if this has been brought up before. I did do a search of the topic and nothing came up. After seeing several AR manufacturers producing AR rifles in .308, is there any word on S&W doing it? I am interested in a .308 especially after seeing several of my fellow partners buying the AR10 and Colt releasing the interchangeable 556/308 uppers. Thanks for any input/info.

Though I am not the person with the answer to this question very well, I too am interested in .308 combat rifles.

That I know of S&W does not, or has not made one.

Knight and Armalite AR-10's are .308. I hear the FN S.C.A.R. in .308 is a fantastic update where Armalite left off.

I was thinking about a .300BLK upper from S&W. Depends on distance of shooting. You can use the same mags and lower if you have an AR platform already. Simple upper switch and you done. AR 10s are not the lightest of rifles to be carrying for amount of distance.

I know it isn't the .308 you inquired about, just some friendly information.

I wonder how colt does it. do they start with an AR10 lower and then build a 5.56 upper to fit on it. Do they use special AR10 mags set up to hold 5.56 bullets. We all know there is quite a bit of difference between AR10's and AR15's physically and dimensionally?

Thank you SGT45...that was more info than I could come up with.
I am really interested in an affordable larger caliber AR from Smith so I can Deer hunt here in Kansas with it. I would prefer a 243 Win.

I have been looking into the .300 whisper and checking the reload supplies out as I also want to get into reloading and the site says the .300 whisper/ .300 ACC blackout is a 308 Diameter which I found interesting.

Search results for: 300 whisper

S&W will probably get around to sticking their rollmark on some version of it.

In the meantime, if you want the best value in a "big" AR, the DPMS LR-308 is a bargain.

But they aren't very accurate. ;)

Oneyeopn,

Rock River makes their LAR-8 in .243, 7mm08 and .308. Shooting Times had a nice article about it a couple months ago. I was impressed. If my arm was twisted enough, I could be forced to accept one in 7mm08!!;)

I prefer the DPMS/SR25 type magazines. I also like the fact that the DPMS type use standard AR15 type fire control components.

I have still have one DPMS LR and one of the current production Bushmaster .308 ORC's that is a close to an enlarged AR15 lower as I've had in a .308/7.62 AR.

Both are great shooters, and contrary to what many speculate, the Bushy isn't a rebadged DPMS. The two are compatible but definitely different.

The Colt LE901 is a "modular" rifle. The lower is not the same as the 5.56. It has a mag well that fits with the Magpul .308 magazine, and it has two front pins, one for the .308 upper and one for the 5.56 upper. The mag well has an insert into which the standard 5.56 magazine locks. Thus, to change from .308 to 5.56, you remove the .308 upper, insert the magazine insert, change the buffer and recoil spring, then install the 5.56 upper using the other pin hole. Here is a video showing the ease of switching calibers.

I must be missing something, isn't the M&P 10 S&W's version of the AR-10 in .308? I just visited their website to be sure and sure enough, they offer a .308 AR now.....

many manufacturers make an ar-type rifle in a .308 chamber (or 7.62 NATO). they call it an ar10, not an ar15. i have a dpms, which i like. the ar15 designation is reserved for the 5.56 chamber (actually none are chambered in .223).
