M&P .22 Ammo Ejection Issues

My dad and I both have new M&P .22 pistols. His has about 700 rounds and mine has 200. Neither gun will eject Federal Premium 40 grain solid rounds. Both guns love CCI 40 grain solid standard velocity (navy blue box) and high velocity (silver box) and function flawless with them.

Is there any trick to getting the Federal Champions to eject, or do both guns need more break in time? Both guns fire those rounds without issues, its just that neither will eject them.

FWIW I use Frog lube as my cleaner and CPL. I also have a new FS M&P 9MM with about 950 rounds which so far has also performed flawless. I have fed it Federal American Eagle red box, WWB, and Remington UMC and have not had a single misfire, jam, or FTE.

Some guns just don't like certain ammo, and rimfires are probably the most picky. It usually doesn't matter but with the difficulty finding .22 ammo these days it kinda sucks if your gun has a limited selection of loads it prefers. You might find a different lot of Federal may work fine, I'm not sure the quality control these days is the best on what they are shipping.

Just wanted to chime in here- I just got a brand new S&W M&P 22 Compact, coincidentally also with my father to sort of share, on Sunday and busted caps for the first time yesterday-

It started w/ Federal AutoMatch ( which is a 40 gr RN I believe) and CCI SV (also 40 gr RN) and all was well .. I went to a big box of Federal Value Pack 36gr HPs and while for the vast majority it was fine, it did probably have 5-10 problems, about equal failures to feed and failures to eject. AND I firmly believe it was just a new rimfire semiauto pistol being new and needing broken in, but yours was a Federal giving problems, as was mine, different rounds I know but just something I noticed.


I finished with CCI Mini Mag 36gr HPs and it ate them up like chicken chow mein, made amazing accuracy, loud booms, and as fast firing as I could make it go. So I may just need more breaking in or it just might not love those Fed Bulk HPs.

I tend to think at some guns don't like certain ammo. I have over a 1000 rounds through mine and it doesn't like the Winchester HP in the 333 bulk box. I've shot Aguila, CCI standard, Thunderbolts, Norma Tac22, Golden Bullets, and just about any kind of stuff lay around in an old coffee can with no problems. When it comes to the Winchester stuff, I have about a 25% failure to eject rate. The last time it was shot was for my daughter to use as a training tool to learn how to clear malfunctions, and now that that's done, I wont ever use it again.

I do agree totally... absolutely right.

My first long gun ever, purchased a few days after my first gun purchase ever, was a Remington 597. I loved the fact it looked JUST LIKE the Remington 700 (SPS Varmint combo) Dick's Sporting Goods had also for sale... until I got it to the range... and I had more jams , failures ,and problems than I did successful rounds. The thing just sucked- everyone online told me how stupid I was to not listen to them and buy it anyway when everyone told me to get a Ruger 10/22. It was worse next time- so I put it in the closet. Got a shotgun soon after and had fun with that, 2nd month got a Savage Mark II GXP for $149- and had a BLAST with that, so much fun, I started to see the love for .22LR and I bought a 15-22 right after. I shot them all year long of '10 until Christmastime ... I decided to take the 597 off the floor of my closet, spend some time, money, and effort- and give it the TLC it needed. A few hundred dollars in gunsmith bills, Volquartsen parts, and even a new Nikon ProStaff 4-12x40mm, it was AMAZING at the range, never a problem since. *** HOWEVER, TO THIS DAY *** it will not shoot Remington .22LR very well. Golden Bullet basically is a no-go, Thunderbolts are fielders choice, etc. I bought my Dad a 597 this past Christmas and I bought the Volquartsen extractor & hammer from the jump (plus a ProStaff) and did the upgrades immediately, and it also hates Remington rimfire ammo-

Neither 597s nor the 15-22 will cycle Winchester very often, and when they do the accuracy sucks. Just can't really use Winchester nor Remington rimfire ammos it seems. Federal & CCI, in like Flynn.

Neither my M&P15-22 or my M&P 22 like Federal ammo. I have too many FTE with Federal ammo. I have tried Remington (some FTF but never and FTE if it goes bang) CCI mini mag, 2 different kinds of federal HV, Armscor HV and Fiocchi HV. Federal HV lots of FTE. Remington has a few FTF. The others all work perfectly. I ended up just using the federal in my Colt Frontier 22 revolvers and use the other stuff in the Semi autos

I am lucky, and actually all things considered very very lucky, to have a Savage - specifically the bolt-action Savage Mark II "GXP" .22LR ... basically a basic, wooden stock ( which is beautiful IMHO, great color and nice checkering) which came with a cheap, but fine, Bushnell 3-9x40mm rimfire scope. I had to replace it w/ a great Nikon Monarch 4-12x40mm BDC scope due to a friend busting it but point being-

The Savage combo pack was $199.99 in early 2010, I got it for the sale price of $149.99 w/ an additional 10% off all the accessories I bought for it at the time. It is an amazing little rifle that shoots ANY .22LR AMMO I HAVE EVER FED IT - now some more accurate and less dirty than others but - if and when I get an ammo that isn't working with my others, my Savage eats it up like chicken chow mein. So I usually am able to take chances on an untested or unknown rimfire ammo because I know that even if my Remington 597s or 15-22 (and now my M&P22C of course !!! ) won't run or doesn't like/ has terrible results on a particular ammo- I can feed it to my Savage.

I expect to feed my M&P22C a diet of decent bulk ammo at worst and for bigger plinking sessions but certainly will take advantage of it with some good stuff for different jobs and tasks.

Whats frustrating to me is that the Federal I bought is not the bulk ammo; its the stuff that comes in 50 round boxes with the light blue color box. I have 4 500 round bricks of it that I have yet to open. From the research I did I thought I would be OK since what I read was that it liked Federal. Now it appears I am stuck with 2,000 rounds of FTE ammo.

There are at least two, maybe more varieties of Federal in blue boxes.
Questions are Velocity? Lead nose or plated? Round nose or hollow point?

I've found that while one type works without fail in my 1911-22, others do not.

You might check around the extractor. Although you aren't expected (by the factory) to disassemble it, you should look for buildup that would keep it from gripping well. Around the extractor itself, and in the cut that it slips into in the breech face. I took a toothpick to those areas, and busted a lot of crud from an apparently clean surface.

1240 FPS 40 grain lead round nose. Not to be confused with the Gameshock stuff in a very similar box.

I can take a look around the extractor to see if there is any buildup. I'm starting to think it just doesn't like those rounds as well as it shoots CCI silver box which has the almost identical specs of the Federal.

That's the one my 1911-22 will not choke down. Mine also loves the Blazer. It has 6,000 plus rounds through it, and is on new recoil springs.

The failure I see is that the extractor loses it's hold on the empty cartridge, leaving it at about 50% extracted. Things go badly after that. I banished that ammo to my revolver.

I have had similar problems with my M&P22 and federal bulk ammo. I found that lead RN was more problematic than CPLRN. I also found the giving extra attention to cleaning the chamber, even polishing it , was helpful.
I've had no problems with any CCI, Blazer, Rem Golden, Amer. Eagle CPLRN( made by FED) , Win. Wild Cat, or CPL bulk ammo.

Federal fte

My mp 22 has about 1300 rounds thru it, but it doesn't like federal. It likes everything else, even the cheapest Remington.
I'll never buy federal again.

Just got a refresher on this yesterday, bought a P22 for my nephew because he like mine so well. Mine would shoot anything I've tried in it no problem, but my favorite M-22 Winchester would have FTE issues every now and then. Switched to Remington Golden bullets and did fine with no problems. Now I put a little on it being a new gun and needing some break-in, but again I've use the M-22 in several new guns and never had any kind of failure rate such as this before. Just goes to show some guns have a liking for certain rounds.

I am laughing because up until Monday when I shot my new M&P22C, I was convinced Federal was pretty much un-faultable .... the world's most forgiving rimfire ammo. Now several people, all the same problem.

In the end it really could not matter less- I have TONS of rimfire ammo, more than I will shoot probably, and I basically buy more whenever I can find a decent buy- and I have tons of different stuff, of course I have my favorites and my firearms have their own favorites but I still vary the brands just for this reason.


In the end i will just feed the gun whatever it wants to eat , no problems, but surprising I thought that Federal was the universal symbol of rimfire love.

If it is like the full size it might need a little lube where the hammer engaged the slide. Mine would drag some since the hammer spring seems pretty heavy.

I purchased my S&W M&P .22 pistol in Januaray, and only been able to get my hands on a few types of bullets. I have had great success using Golden Bullets, Thunderbolts, Rem Subsonic and Norma Tac22. I probably won't by Norma again, if I can find others. Cost is a little high IMO. I have had nothing but problems with Winchester white box 555, 333, 222, 235 and 300. Does anyone know why so many different quantity counts exist for the same product? Anyhow, these rounds go bang each time, but they will not eject on their own. I have to rack-the-slide after each shot to extract the spent shell. Ugg, very annoying. My suggestions would be to stay away from them. Has any had good luck with them in their S&W M&P .22 pistol?

My M&P .22 doesn't like Winchester with "superX" on the bottom and I have a bunch of it. It seems to be a lighter load and the slide is not going all the way back. All other ammo does fine. Although it does seem to be getting better. Wonder if a lighter spring would help.

I'm kinda nerdy and actually record what ammo I shoot... Overall Federal American Eagle is the worst at 7% failure across guns. Federal bulk 1.2%, Winchester bulk 1.3%... Of course CCI comes in best at mini mag .6% and standard at .2% failures.



That said, each gun I have likes different ammo. Golden bullets run almost flawlessly in my Sig Mosquito, but my Ruger 10/22 hates them.



You just have to figure out what works best for your firearms.

These days you have shoot whatever is available....I always had good results with CCI and other premium brand ammo packed in the plastic cases. Bulk pack (loose) ammo of any brand always gave me problems in my Ruger MKII Target model. If you look at most bulk packs the ammo will have dings and some of the bullets will be slightly crooked.
