M&P 40/9 Conversion

When I go to the range I switch my barrels in the middle of shooting and the difference in recoil is minimal yes obviously there's a difference but not enough that it would make me feel inadequate practicing with 9mm then carrying 40. And like he said I highly doubt in the middle of a gun fight someone would be like oh no I'm unprepared for the slightly extra recoil.

I shoot a lot of different calibers. .22, .32, .380, .38, 9x18, 38-40, .40, .45 they all have different recoil so just adding 9mm to that list isn't going to throw me off.

I remember asking around the local gun shops soon after I purchased my M&P 40, if the sold the 9mm S&W barrels. The looks I got!!! ...and comments like, "Well why didn't you buy a 9 to begin with?"...

I've had absolutely NO problems with my conversion. That's one of the main reasons I went with a M&P 40 to begin with... so I could buy a factory 9mm barrel and shoot cheaper. I also picked up two 9mm factory mags to complete the ensemble. Switch-out takes less than 45 seconds. The other reason I went with the S&W M&P is that it was cheaper than the Sig conversion. Hey, I was on a budget! Best investment EVER!

I have no intentions on doing this but out of morbid curiosity, you can change a .40 to a .9 but can you do the reverse?

Unfortunately it is not as cheap of a conversion the other way around but it is possible with a 40 upper slide which occasionally you can find for around 250 if your lucky. I believe the only difference is a few thousandths of an inch I wonder if someone filed the barrel part thinner if they could get it to fit in the slide and just change the extractor that would only be like 100$ and would probably work

I also owned a m&p9c and once I found out about the conversion I immediately sold it and bought the 40 and the barrel I am sooo glad I did and yes when I mentioned it at the shop I got a few weird looks because they know its true but they did mention the whole warranty thing and smith doesn't recommend but why would they it would just cut there market in half!!

Shaving a bit of the barrel is the ONLY change.

The extractor inside the .40 and the 9mm are the exact same part.

In the end, it costs just the same to convert .9mm to .40 as it does the .40 to 9mm. All you need is a barrel and magazine.

This has already been done. Pictures and details are in the other thread. Just use the search up top.

I've been looking to buy a MP9 FS, but now this thread has me thinking. To be clear:
I buy a .40, then order a 9mm barrel and 9mm mags. If I decide to shoot 9mm, simply swap barrel and mags? That's it, or is there some other modification. I am also not understanding .357, can that be shot through the .40 barrel?

Sorry, new to pistols.

See thats what i thought. file the top of barrel and good to go especially because the extractors are in fact the same

Yes all you have to do is buy a m&p40 then a 9mm barrel and appropriate magazine and your good to go. You could technically skip the magazines but then that will cause issues just get a 9mm mag and you have yourself a completely reliable 9mm m&p. Now with the 357 same thing just a barrel because the mags are the same as the 40 so you will have a 3 caliber gun I am more then satisfied with mine I bought a SIG p250 to be able to do this and ended up just selling it and getting a couple barrels and bought the ruger sr1911

If you have a FS .40. Then all you need is a 9mm barrel/mag and a .357 barrel/mag. I say you need the "mags" just to be on the safe side of having no issues. Some people just buy the barrels and thats it. Of course all of this is intended to be used at the range and ONLY at the range.

Thanks for the responses guys. I thought I had it all narrowed down to exactly what I wanted after 2 months of research, now I'm scratching my head again.

Finally got to try out my S&W 9mm barrel in my M&P40 today. I used a 9mm magazine with the 9mm barrel and ran 100 rounds with absolutely no problems. Thanks for all the info here. Got the barrel from Midway and the magazine from Maryland Small Arms Range all within the last couple weeks.

Picked up a new Storm Lake conversion barrel locally for 60.00. Can't wait to try it out in my M&P 40.

I opted for the Storm Lake 9mm conversion too. Primarily because at the time (read Newbie :o ) I assumed the S&W 9mm barrel was different/spec'd for the M&P 9 etc. In hind site, I may have chosen the factory 9 barrel. When I eventually get around to "needing" a 357 barrel, I will certainly go with the S&W piece. I guess at the end of the day, the fact that our M&P 40's are so flexible and easily converted to .40, .357 & 9 mm is a homerun not matter how you look at it.

Be well folks...

I have purchased an M&P .40, will be picking it up later this week. I am really interested in getting a 9mm barrel and mags for it, as I have a few rounds of 9mm here. Question though, how do you keep track of which barrel you have in the gun? What method do you use to store the other barrel that is not in the gun? Thanks.

OK, after reading more in this forum, I found the answer to one of my questions. That's what I get for posting before I have the gun in my hands. :)

This will be my first S&W semi auto pistol. My other S&W is a model 15.

OK. I gotta ask. Would somebody mind posting a link to the Midway page for purchasing the 9mm S&W?

I think this one is it but it says nothing about a "Shield."

Smith & Wesson Barrel M&P Compact 9mm Luger

I'm also very intrigued about potentially shooting .357 in my new Shield .40 as well. Any chance of a link to the Sig that's suppose to be a drop-in too?

Thanks!

I have acquired a bunch of stuff for my m&p so it now has its dedicated case. The barrel is very similar to your current barrel with the 9mm etching on top. I like keeping my barrels with my gun so I keep them in the case with the gun in tubes.

They are referring to FS 40 and FS 9 in the post

Converted my 40c and my buddy decided to do the same. Now if we can only get mags.
We did try with another's mag. Worked perfect on both the full size and compact. Different barrels of course.
