M&P9C or Glock 19?

As my previous posts will show, I carry a G19. If it had the trigger of an M&P, it would be better...a lot better. However, the G19 vs the M&P 9c? Strictly personal preference. Objectively compared:

G19 weighs 2 oz more than the 9c
G19 barrel is 4" vs 3.5" for the 9c
G19 grip is full 3-finger without an extension
G19 Magazine is 15 rounds vs 10 for the 9c
G19 is not available with a thumb safety, although Cominolli sells a good one for $95
G19 trigger is terrible IMO, and the M&P trigger is great (OK, that one is not objective, but it's true.)

I personally like a longer grip, and I REALLY like the 15 round mag capacity. I don't find the G19 to be particularly "accurate" with me shooting, although I shoot it a little better than the SA XDM-45 4.5". I shoot a Colt XSE much better and a Sig P227 better still. Ten rounds is OK for a .45 but not a for a 9--for me, anyway. All things considered, the G19 is a pretty good compromise of size, weight, capacity and handling.

Couldn't go wrong with either. Personally, I prefer the feel of the M&P series pistols. I do use both a Glock 42 and a Shield 9mm as concealed carry pistols with no major preference to either (the situation dictates which I carry). I did get rid of my Glock 19 M.O.S. because I significantly prefer my M&P9L CORE over it. In fact, I have purged my collection of all Glock pistols other than my G42. My personal vote would be go with the M&P9C over the G19.

BowserB, FYI the magazine capacity of a 9C (unless you live in a restricted state) is 12, not 10. The 40C standard capacity is 10.

Worth mentioning is that Glock's warranty is one year. Period.
That maybe true but the one time I sent one back they didn't ask and didn't care. In fact, instead of fixing they gave me a whole different gun!

I have been debating on my next purchase for a little while now so I thought I would see everyone's opinions.

Even if it was a $50 dollars more the G19 is a no brainier.
It's the gun every manufacture has to aspire towards and most will even admit that. I'm not into safe action triggers anymore myself or even striker fired for that matter and have no plans to ever shoot a 9mm much less own one.

Believe it or not I'm .380 and .45 kind of guy, short and stubby and 'ole so Americana. :)

This keeps getting mentioned incorrectly.

The standard 9C mags are 12 rounds, 10 in restricted markets only.

This is for both the flat & pinky type base mag.

Flat base:

Smith & Wesson M&P9 Compact 12 Round Mag 9mm Steel - 194540000 - 022188131833

Pinky Rest:

Smith & Wesson Mag S&W M&P Compact 9mm Luger 12-Round Finger Rest

My bad. I got 10 from the S&W website. Accidentally picked a CA compliant version. 12 is right. That's better. Still, 15 is 25% more than 12, and a full 3 finger grip is better than a pinky extension. If the 9c had just a bit longer grip for 3 fingers and 15 rounds, I could live without the extra 1/2 inch barrel length. But I know others will say the longer grip is harder to conceal. I guess that's true, but I have no trouble concealing the G19 grip. But then, I also carried a SA XDM45, a full size handgun with 4.5 barrel and 13+1 rounds of 45. I did tend to lean [even more] to the right when carrying that one though.

Which is why I carry the 17 round FS M&P9

Only slightly larger then a G19, for me @ 6'1"
very easy to conceal. No different the my old G23.

When I was in the gun shop I compared them side by side.
Very little difference as far as overall size.

Even has a lifetime warantee as an M&P, and the slide is black stainless, which helps it be less maintenance intensive, while still more covert!

I'm not sure what finish either one uses but the stuff my G19 has been through as a daily carry i can say that maintenance issues when it comes to what the slide material is made of is not an issue.

I carry an older 3rd gen G19. S# dates to 2003. I bought it around 2009. Prior to me it was a police gun in FL (says so on the box). I've carried it almost every day since 2009. I've gotten caught in downpours where I was completely soaked, I've done outside work in heat and humidity where I sweated through everything and looked like I stepped out of the shower fully clothed. I carry it IWB, in a hybrid leather/kydex holster. Sweat enough and it goes right through the leather. It has been in the heat and in the snow. I have held it after salting the driveway without washing my hands first. It goes in and out of the holster at least twice a day. I have never purposely wiped it down just to wipe it down. And of course between 2003 and 2009 it rode in a holster every day. After all that there is barely any wear on the finish. Just a few polished spots on the corners.
Now this is an older gun so their finish may be different now.

Years ago i did have an M&P 45. Took it camping one time and after 3 days it developed so.e rust speckles on top of the slide. Nothing major. Some oil and 0000 steel wool took care of it in a few seconds

As mentioned, I carried a G23 for 20 years, the Glock
is a great weapon. Just has a **** grip for me (and many others)

That's why there are several online gunsmiths that specialize
in removing the finger bumps/grooves, reshaping the grip,
stippling, undercutting trigger guard, etc-etc.

I bought my M&P knowing full well I would replace the trigger
with Apex parts, bought a sight pusher adding almost $300
to the price of this platform all because I love the feel of the grip
and overall fit & finish of the Smith. Just my opinion.

In terms of rust and corrosion resistance and ease of maintenance, I think older Glocks(pre-2010 or so) are about as good as it gets. I was talking with Massad Ayoob about it a few years back and he said that in terms of the guns that we're submerged in salt water during Katrina, Glocks we're the only guns that didn't have rust issues. He said LEO's involved reported even stainless steel guns were rusting whereas the Glocks weathered the storm without a hitch.

However, newer Glocks simply aren't the same quality regarding this specific issue IMO. They changed the Tenifer metal treatment to a similar albeit less effective alternative and the outer finishes they are now using are much less durable.

I remember reading frequent reports of early M&P's rusting, but I think they pretty much have it straightened out now. Still, I'm very content with my four older Glocks.

I have both (actually, a M&P 40c and a Glock 23) same guns different caliber. Anyway, I have made the statement that the M&P is what the Glock should have been all along, but now I'm not so sure. Th Smith has a thumb safety, but feels slightly topheavy to me, while the Glock has a squarish grip and a blocky slide that I don't particularly care for.

Bottom line, I guess, is shoot both and see which one you like better. Great price on both, so I dn't see how you could go wrong with either one.

OP, go to the Glock forum and ask the same question.
The question is a year old. Don't think the OP has been here in a while.

Why ask there? Look at the mixture of responses the OP got here. Probably get a mixture there as well. Not too many people stick to only one type or brand of gun

For me the choice would be M&P 9c or Glock 26. You are not looking for a full sized gun. The Glock 26 is lighter and more concealable. If the Choice was between the M&P 9c or a Glock 19, I would would choose the M&P 9c. The ergos are much better with M&P for my hand. I don't like the grip on the Glock 19 or the Glock 17. Interestingly the Glock 26 fits perfectly. The hump on the grip fits perfectly into my palm.

Source please?
I'm sorry. I don't remember. I know I saved a link to the article, because it was a credible source, but now I can't find it. The article was a bit eye opening, since the ND's we hear about are the ones considered newsworthy by the mainstream press, and they're usually not something boring like that. The source will come to me, though. It might have been a book--John Farnam or Massad Ayoob--and that would explain my not finding a link. When I do, I'll post it as a new message.

Though I'm a M&P fan boy, if I had to choose between those two I'd go with the Glock given their size similarity and the fact that the 19 holds 15+1 and the 9c 10+1.

But if you're just wanting a new gun both are great guns, go for it!

the M&P 9c actually is 12+1 ... the 10+1 is the california compliant model.

but I agree with most. the M&P 9c is a great gun and I have both (my wife and I actually each have an M&P 9c we liked them so much), but the Glock 19 is what I would get if you could only get one. It's the honda civic of the gun world. Popular for a VERY good reason.

Special forces in Socom all use the G19 not SW. Seals,Marsog, delta, green beret etc. The MP series do not hold up. MP police auto's break down faster and have a shorter service life. Our local PC gets about 3 years out of a MP SW. Not Good!
