I have model 581 with a M stamped above the model number. Can some one please tell me what this stands for/means?

Thanks

At some point your gun was returned to the factory for a warranty modification. Don't know what the issue was (someone else will post that), but that is the way people know the modification was made to the gun.

Thanks for the info. I have had it for several years and it has never given me a problem. I understand it was police weapon at one time and the trigger has been smoothed to an easy pull. Nice weapon in my humble opinion.

they stamped a M on my 586 after a recall. they replaced the hammer nose and some sorta bushing. bought my gun in march '81 and the recall was in '87, if memory serves.

M mod was a change in the hammer nose bushing as I recall.
Something about soft primers flowing back seizing the rotation....da da da
I have one as well.
