M60-4 My First J Frame since 1966

I bought a 36-6 new in the early 1980s, and never regretted the purchase. Mine came with a set of oversized Hogue rubber Monogrips that were quickly replaced with a wooden Hogue Monogrip. It is definitely a fantastic shooter and has started a number of envious conversations. What would be nice is finding a nice condition 60-4 to keep the 36-6 company!

The best of luck with your 60-4!

Thanks, everyone. I really enjoy the discussion, but more importantly, the beautiful photos.

I'm new to the revolver world, and just today, I did some research on 3" and 4" barrels. Before I saw this post, coincidentally I put the Model 60 on my short list. Smith sells a Performance Center Pro version of the Model 60. Do you think it's worth the extra price?

Also, how does it shoot compared to the 686, which is also on my short list (but I might buy both, LOL)?
And does the 3" barrel make a difference in terms of performance compared to 4" barrels in general?

I am getting a 60-4 from a member (my dealer should receive it in a few days). This gun also has a custom 9mm cylinder coming with it. I can not wait to get it (thanks to the forum member who worked out this deal with me).

I plan on setting my gun up like this photo I borrowed off the net (including a set of those J frame target grips I found on another gun in my safe).

I also have a two year old model 60-15 (slab side 3”, .357). I don’t usually like these internal lock guns, but this one is a keeper. The 60-4 will be a fine companion piece.

My model 60 w/ Mini Cokes:

Dale53 showed me his Model 60-4 years ago then had to help me find one for myself so he didn’t have to keep it locked up or hidden when I visited. We agree that it’s one of the all time greatest revolvers S&W ever made, differing only in grip choice. Mine has a beautiful pair of dark rosewood combats while his is wearing part of an old tire. :D

Those of you that have the original 60-4 box numbered to the gun does the box label have CS or RB listed under Stock?
I've seen both on boxes but the guns have same Uncle Mike's combat grips.

Mine has the CS. It came with the Uncle Mike's, but I settled on these. They are most pleasing to the eye as well as being very comfortable in my hand. Although, I gotta admit, I do like the looks of those Mini-Cokes. I can only imagine they cost as much as the gun itself! :D

I just remembered I had this Lady Smith carry bag with nothing to go in it or use for it.

I think the 60-4 will fit nicely and be protected well in it or should I use some other case?

Oh well,a forum member ran an ad WTB a Lady Smith carry bag so my LS bag is off to a new home.
My 60-4 is now residing in an S&W blue plastic box with the grey fasteners for trips to the range.
I'm now eying a 2nd 60-4 but....

I had a 60-10 3" .357 for some time but decided I liked K frames for 3" .357s instead, so I ended up passing it on to another lucky soul. I'd be lying if I claimed I never thought about that gun again...

I will take advantage of the chance to share (again) my favorite woods-walking companion. The old pair of Mustang stocks fit me well, the old Safariland holster has served me well since new, and the adjustable sights teamed with wadcutter loads have supplied quite a bit of small game for the camp pot. With the ability to switch to shot loads or heavier serious loadings, it may be my most versatile handgun. Judging by all the great pictures in this thread, I am not alone!
