I have read about people doing it, but until today hadn't done it myself.

I am on a business trip in VA and stopped in at a LGS here. Nice place, very few used guns (my favorite kind).

Looking around and spot an old S&W blisterpack mag from across the store. Head over and find two 4013 single stack mags new old stock and two used (in very good cond.) 3913 mags. Got a little bit of change from my $100.

I have been casually looking for both of these pistols, but the search got a little more serious! It felt weird to buy mags for a pistol I don't yet own, but weird in a good way

I think you'll find it's kinda the norm around "here".
As the supply dries up, it makes even more sense.
It's funny though, I don't do this for ANY other make.
(I guess I did get quite a few new factory MP 5 mags
before I got my MP 5, but that was different). Some
of us even get grips for models we don't have. Yet.

Oh yeah, once bitten by the S&W "bug" you will be hunting down parts and looking for that elusive model for your collection( still looking for a 4516). I have purchased extra grips and magazines, and parts for my 3rd generations for that just in case moment.

Just bought a 1983 Walther PPK/S in 22lr. Newer magazines don't fit older guns.
The older 22lr magazines are rarer than hen's teeth and very expensive. So I wound up buying two for big money before I got the gun.
Have a 1970's Beretta 70S in 380, same thing. Seems to be the new normal.

....been there...done that...got the scars to prove it;).....bought every black follower 4506 mag I came across before I found the one I wanted....the 4506-1 wasn't an "if or maybe"...it was a "when"..:D

I bought three S&W Model 52 magazines a full six months before I found the right 52 to bring home. Six months later again and I have two 52's and eight magazines and I feel like it's a fine place to be.

I'm even dumber. I had owned one Walther P-38 and was well aware that modern guns improved on them. I was not tempted by another P-38 or P-1 but Cabela's had an excelent condition P-1 magazine for $4. It must have been left over from the large batch of P-1s they sold for $400. I could give it to Mike at the range for his P-1. I bought it then years passed without running across Mike. A pawn shop that I occasionally check out put up for sale an excellent condition P-1 with no magazine for $299. How could I deny them each others company?

CDNN had Mauser M2 magazines for 9.99 at one time. I bought ten. Why you ask? They are relatively easy to convert a .40 S&W to 10mm. Long term project.

Totally normal for us 3rd Gen collectors. :D With so many 3rd Gen magazines already classified as "discontinued" or "out-of-stock-no-backorder", it makes sense to track which ones are still readily available vs. not available and buy all you can find of the latter in local shops and shows.

I've been on a mission all this year to build up my supply of certain discontinued and very-hard-to-find 3rd Gen magazines. I'd been buying CS45 magazines for a long while (the older/good ones that work) before I finally found my first CS45. I also had to buy up some CS9 magazines before I felt confident enough to buy my second CS9. I still have a bunch of 4013/4053 single stack magazines I bought when I was trying to expand my collection with two more 4053's and a 4013. Paid dearly for those discontinued magazines before I lost the damn guns to other less concerned buyers. But still, no regrets. I can always sell or trade them down the road for ones I need.

I've even bought a bunch of 10mm magazines even though I have essentially zero chance of finding and being able to afford a 10mm 3rd Gen here in moonbat MA. Again, they can always be traded or resold. They are like money in the bank. :) Actually, I may be forced into selling off at least some of them fairly soon in order to fund other projects.

Most recently, I have been buying and trading to increase my supply of "pre-ban" 5900-series hi-cap magazines. I now own seven 3rd Gens that use those 5900-series magazines not counting the 6900-series guns... but I am still way short of my goal on genuine "pre-bans", which are required for me to stay out of prison here in moonbat MA. :(

Such is life when you collect a bunch of older, discontinued guns with little remaining factory support. But it's too late now for me to change. :) I'm hooked! :D

Thanks for reassurance that I'm not crazy. Well, not anymore crazy than you guys.

Speaking of crazy, do you ever think you hear guns talking to you begging to be bought and shot?

Well now, you may be a little crazy after all. :p

In all my years, I can honestly say that no gun has ever actually "talked" to me. :D

I may have talked a little to it... but I've never had one actually talk back to me! ;)

Especially before the Kolorado ban took effect, yes, I bought lots of magazines for guns I didn't own. Several no longer fit that qualifier

Although I understand why people do it I don't. I'd much rather put that money into mags for which I already own guns

Hopefully you're never in the situation where it's essential - but if you were in Colorado before it became Kolorado, you could have been looking at: "If I don't buy MP5 magazines now, any future MP5 I buy will have to use 15-round magazines if they even exist" and then swap MP5 for any gun you might ever want...

For rare guns/magazines it's even worse "I may not be able to find one of these.... ever" Go find a Wildey magazine for instance - and that's not even mentioning the price.

They sold those things for years at $1.99 until they finally started throwing them in free with any order. I've got about eighty of them in a box,......and one M2 .40. I've got three of the M2 .45's but mags for those are near impossible to find. Very annoying situation.

I buy mags for guns I don't even want as long as the deal is good enough. I went through a period where two Connecticut dealers were selling off tons of oddball highcap pistol mags cheap on GB and I ended up with dozens of different mags for guns I'll probably never own,....but they'll be good trade fodder some day. When new highcap factory mags are being sold for $5 a pop I'm a buyer,......I don't care what they are.

I buy/acquire many 3rd gen mags at gunshows. The 9mm and 40S&W mags are for pistols I have and/or going to have. I also pick up 45ACP mags for people I know that are seeking 45 mags. I have no intention of getting a 45 pistol as I am not a fan of 45ACP.
2-6rd for 4513TSW
1-7rd for 457/4516/4513TSW
1-7rd for M945PC
4-8rd for 4506

I sell them for $5 over what I paid + postage.
The past couple months I sold(to around the country) 9 10mm mags for $45 each +postage. My 10mm mag supplier has dried up(for now).

I think you deserve the honor of being named the undisputed King of 3rd Gen Magazines!!! :D

I just went through another very disappointing "3rd Gen magazine hunting" day yesterday. :o Came home empty-handed again. :(

I desperately need to tap into some new sources.

In the 90s and early days of the 21st century as I roamed the back woods of Pa for work I had 15-20 guns shops I'd visit 3 or 4 times a year.........was always buying up any used or "Sale" magazines for my Smiths, Beretta's and Sigs.......

Currently don't have any Smith 39s but would like a 639..... IIRC "the stash" has about a half dozen 39 mags......
