Make the .41 Special

I did some load testing with the .41 Special on Father's Day. The 7.5 gr load of Unique had a better group than this 7.3 gr.(stupid trifocals)I went to 8.5 grains but groups got worse and it defeats the purpose of a Special. I did not get to Chrony these as the terrain was to low in front of the bench to set up. Maybe this weekend

I'm using new Unique, and Universal. Don't have a chrony. This is the first I have used Universal, and I think I like it. Is clements working on DA Rugers, now? He had stopped working on anything but S&W N-frames, Ruger single actions, and Marlin lever actions. I am very pleased with my 686 in .41 spl he did for me. I recommend his work, HIGHLY. I hope you decide to have one built. The more .41spl guns there are, the more likely it will become a factory offering, like the 25-06.

I received a e-mail form Hamilton Bowen 7/12/09 about a 581 conversion to .44 Spl. I thought a mini M-58 would be nice to have. The basic SW01 package is $695, add to that SW240 pin in sight conversion for $150, and SW251 sight in for $105 you can have it for $950 plus your base gun.

a 5-shot .41 Spec. K-frame Mountain Gun would be perfect! I'd REALLY dip in to my stash of STarline .41 Spec brass with one of these around!

L-Frame .41 Special

Since I'm a die-hard .41 Mag. fan, I think I'm qualified to ask a question that makes me a Devil's Advocate.

If you want less than a full Mag. cartridge, just load it down. Why is a .41 Spl. necessary?

However, if (like me) you love L-Frames due to small hand size, then a .41 Spl. in a 6-shot revolver like the Model 646 would be GREAT!!

I have three .41 Mag revolvers (2 S&W's & 1 Black Hawk) and four moulds with the lightest being a 170gr. I can load it or my 210gr. down to be very comfortable & the equivilent to a .41 Special.

As you point out, there is no reason for a .41 Special in an N frame. The whole idea is a round with .41 special ballistics, ie 40+ caliber, 900-950 fps, in a 6 shot, .41 frame revolver. The candidates would be a 686, a Ruger GP100, and a Python. This is the gun the model 58 probably should have been.

Free Brass

If anyone decides to have a dedicated .41spl conversion done, I will give you 100 rnds of new Starline .41spl brass. When it is finished, send me a couple of pictures, and a copy of your invoice marked paid, and I will send you 100 rnds of new brass to get you started loading.

Greetings, All,

I once talked to Mr. Bowen about making my old Ruger Speed Six into a 5-shot .41 Magnum. He was willing, but the price was too steep for me at that time. I later bought a Taurus M415, 5-shot .41 Magnum, and other than having to return it to Taurus to correct a sticky and tight chamber, I like it very much. I think it's wonderful woods gun, and not bad for CCW. My only complaint is that nobody makes a decent speedloader, or even good speed strips for a 5-shot .41. I bought several rubber ones, into which the rounds slip sideways. But, in truth, I don't trust them too much, and so don't use them for anything serious.

Do any of you feel that the little Taurus would fill the need for a good, small, 5-shot .41, either Magnum, or Special, and if not, why not? I appreciate your comments, and look forward to reading what you think about this. Thanks, very much, and God Bless!

Every Good Wish,
Doc (.41 Mag fan.)

I dunno about with the magnums...
But I carry a taurus 445 in .44 Special, and LOVE it.
I can see a similar pistol in .41 special a dream to shoot and carry.

I have one of these "Tauri". Also a 45 acp and a 45 colt in similar Taurus guns.
I do not like to shoot factory ammunition in the Taurus 41. I'm to old to do that kind of macho stuff any more. It is painful to shoot with full house factory ammo.

I've not loaded any special ammunition for it, yet, but I will before I go to the range with it again. I hope to come up with an accurate, milder but adequate load for it. Then it will be a good a carry gun, for my particular uses, as the 45 colt version.

Hi, DDixie,

I can measure mine, and compare it to my .41 Smith's and Rugers, then get back to you. I've shot WW Silvertips in my M415, as well as a few Remington 210 grain JSP's. The 210 grain load is a handful in that little gun, but the "Ribber" grips that Taurus put on it, help tame that a good bit. I'll try to dig mine out tomorrow, and make some measurements for you. Thanks for asking, and God Bless!

Every Good Wish,
Doc

P.S. I think that a .41 Special round would be a perfect match for that little Taurus, or for a Smith 5-shot .41 Special.

Why a 5 shot?

Mine is a six shot. A 5 shot would be a lot more expensive.

Hey, DDixie884,

Very nice little pistol! Was it a S&W .44 Special, originally? I love the fact that it is, indeed, a six shot revolver, as you can use regular speedloaders with it. I have a outstanding M657, 3" barrel, Lew Horton Smith, and it's a great shooter. However, for casual woods walking, and backpacking, it's a tad heavy. Also have a M58, nickled, but it's unfired, and may stay that way. So, a 6-shot .41 Special, in a smaller format than an N-frame, would be a marvelous thing, indeed! I look forward to hearing more about your little pistol. Thanks for sharing it, and God Bless!

Every Good Wish,
Doc

It was a standard .357 mag 686. I wouldn't change a 696, they are rare, and expensive. Mine was a cut off barrel, and had little value, except as a shooter. I thought it was a good candidate for conversion, much as an old doggy 3 screw Ruger .357, like so many people make into nice .44spls.

Evening, DDixie884,

Thanks, very much, for that information. Guess I'll have to keep my eyes open for a .357 Mag 686! ;) Sweet Bride has a very nice Ruger GP100, which shoots like a house afire with 140 grain bullets! Hummmmm... I wonder if she will give it to me for this project??? Well, as she likes that gun quite a bit, I doubt it! :D I wouldn't ask her for it, anyway, as she probably WOULD give it to me, and then she wouldn't have her nice .357. So, I'll keep my eyes peeled for a good 686, for a very good price, and see what happens.

I didn't have time to dig out my Taurus today, but hope to in the next few days. Then, I'll make some measurements for you. I do remember that none of my LBT loads would fit in that Taurus, so maybe you're right about the slightly short cylinder. I really didn't want to shoot any of those super heavy bullet loads in that little Taurus, anyway, so all's well that ended well.

Thanks, again, for the info on your conversion gun. Great little pistol, that's for sure! Take care, and God Bless!

Every Good Wish,
Doc
