Marijuana Question

Regarding legalization of pot, this train left the station years ago. Ask any HS student how long it would take them to buy some pot and they would tell you it's not problem, how much would you like? I've had kids tell me it's easier to buy pot than beer. Until recently we had neighbors living behind us, both middle class working folks with kids, who smoked it every weekend. And that's not unusual. Anyone who wants to smoke pot will be able to find it. In many states pot has been de-criminalized. Like it or not, agree or not, it's a fact that pot is here to stay and we can continue to spend billions on "enforcement" or legalize it and put the tax revenue towards treatment of harder drugs. And BTW, if you've been fighting a "war" for 40+ years isn't it reasonable to assume some progress would have been made? Insanity: Doing to same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

Would an individual with alcohol in a urine/blood test in a state where alcohol was legal or illegal be held to account for that substance in their system, or in the case of Colorado, where Marijuana is now legal, could one just go ahead and smoke 9 joints on the drive into work?

Could be, probably, but, I mean, how would you know. Until, at least, you got there, but even then you might not find out for a while.

Personally,I believe the Leftist intentions of legalizing marijuana in Colorado is to reduce the overcrowding in the prison system. You also create a new but somewhat unreliable stream of revenue through taxation.Who will buy their marijuana at the corner store when it's legal to have up to six plants in your home.

Legalizing marijuana doesn't change the policies that companies have regarding drug testing or their ability to fire someone.I'm betting the lawyers are already lining up to test this out.

I really believe that Colorado is well on it's way to becoming a Blue State. Our Legislators didn't get everything they wanted with new gun laws but it was a start. We certainly didn't need another excuse for more nutcases to migrate to our State .

It's going to be interesting to see how this all plays out.My friends with young kids are freaking out.Another friend has a medical pot shop 1/2 block from her house and patients were smoking on the sidewalk and there she was,6 months pregnant, trying not to inhale and furious.
I honestly don't care if people get stoned, they do less damage than drunks do,but I am happy my kids are grown and past all this stuff.

Todays paper had an article about the bordering states law enforcement gearing up to nab the pot tourists for possession when they leave the state. Should be a growth industry!

I'd like to answer but I just did a couple doobies and now I'm at burger king ordering the entire menu.

That's still better than going grocery shopping and getting two of all the good stuff because you know you're going to eat one of them before you check out. (Stolen from George Carlin)

This will become an administrative nightmare. Everything is subject to an endless litany of administrative appeals, collective bargaining challenges, legal challenges, and more appeals. At the moment, drug testing is not sophisticated enough to determine whether an employee is under the influence while on the job, or, simply shows residual trace amounts of a legal substance that entered his system while away from the job site. "Cause" is "cause", and cannot be redefined as "Where there's smoke, there's fire". It will get interesting and burdensome.

On the subject of pot, how many of you LEOs have interrogated (interviewed) a person who was stoned on that drug. All you need do is simply ask a question and smile and stare at them. Most of them can't stop talking and when you don't respond they talk even more. The trick is to stare intently, not blinking more than necessary.

I live in Washington State. Pot, unfortunately is totally legal now. Not just for medical purpose but for recreation as well. (Not making a political statement for or against, I am against it because I have literally deathly allergic.)

Businesses can still enforce their drug policy as they always have. Think of it as if it is drinking alcohol on the job. Substance is legal, but not allowed at most businesses.

Same rule goes for most government jobs. You would have to check with your local government agencies, but here in WA state as with federal jobs, you can be fired if found in your system.

I don't agree with open consumption. Again, treat it just like alcohol. I can't walk down the street drinking a beer here in Ohio. Gotta be on my property or in an appropriate establishment with the right license. Of course you can get around it easy enough if you really want to (Red Solo cup, I fill you up!) but a LEO can bust me if I take that chance. Make it a decent fine for open consumption, say $100 for first offense and go from there.

And I'm OK with that too. If we get it out of the hands of the criminal enterprises that improves the situation compared to we have now.

Saw an article in USA today about the goings on in Colorado
earlier this week. Article stated that residents could buy 1 oz.
at a time and non-residents 1/4 oz.
I don't smoke but i do drink a little on occasion. Never been a
big drinker. An occasional Beer or sip of Moonshine.
The voters spoke in CO. and WA. so be it.
As others have stated before, i'd rather share the road with a
stoner than a drunk.
The legal ramifications of what is going to happen will be sorted
out in the years to come.
To answer one of the OP's questions, employers will still decide
whether or not you can be under the influence and be employed
at their business. At least until that is challenged in a Court of Law.
