May become a flatlander again.......Any Wisconsin Residents out there??

My wife and I moved to the Seattle area from Upper Michigan in 1986 and left WA in 2016

Spent the next 6 years in Prescott, AZ and have been living here in Salmon, ID (Keith Country) for the past 2.5 years.

The Salmon move is a temporary stop and we had been hoping to find a home just north of us in the Hamilton, MT area but the home prices in Ravalli County are beyond ridiculous. Primarily due to folks bailing out of CA and other liberal states AND due to the TV series Yellowstone.

So.....long story short, I will NOT be moving back to Michigan primarily due to their gun registration law and other gun restrictions, but we may be looking for something just below the U.P. in NE Wisconsin.

I have made a few calls to law enforcement in WI to inquire about their gun laws, and I think I can make it work.

I will be able to come back to Salmon each fall for elk/deer hunting so I won't be a flatlander all year thankfully!

Anyone who lives in Wisconsin and can give me additional thoughts would be appreciated!! And if you know of anyone thinking of selling a property with a little acreage, especially by owner, let me know!

We have some of the best whitetail hunting in the country. Plenty of gun shows still popular. Gun laws are liveable, no waiting periods, conceal carry no problem, no mag limits. Standard background check with FFL purchases and extra state paperwork on handguns. Our gun laws are best this part of the country when compared to MI, IL & MN.
 
Interesting to see you use the term flatlander. I thought that was just a northern New England thing, we call everyone south of VT, NH and ME flatlanders. Never been to Wisconsin, but your state dog is my favorite breed, so I love Wisconsin! Except your maple syrup...that's horrible.

Wi gun laws and self protection laws are far better than our neighbors, or a good deal of the country (at least the states i know about). Wi follows Fed regs for NFA items, with the exception of full auto. And i am not a lawyer.

941.26 Machine guns and other weapons; use in certain cases; penalty.
Full autos must be approved by City police chief or County sheriff

However the application of these laws may get convoluted (trying really hard to be polite) in blue areas, especially Madison/Milwaukee, NE pop centers, minnesota border areas and increasingly some northern most counties.

We have Red congress but blue gov and supreme court. While housing/land prices have sky rocketed, am guessing still cheaper than a lot of the country.

And as ya probably already know, it can get colder the further north you go.

Nothing is set in stone, still hopeful that spring will bring an oppourtunity in Ravalli County MT.....but if not we will see what we can find in WI

Since my wife's family lives in Dickinson County where Iron Mountain is located, we would be looking in Florence and Marinette Counties.......so if anyone in that area is considering selling, especially by owner send me a PM or email.

The ONLY reason we are considering a move to WI is to be closer to my wife's family.....and that would be if we can find a place in a nearby county.

I well aware of the deer hunting, fishing, mosquitos, humidity, cold winters etc.

I lived in the U.P. back in the early 1980's for four years, but I was MUCH younger!

Nice hunting Tom, you told me about getting the elk but now I believe you seeing a picture (LOL). Is that the rifle you bought in Prescott? Chistensen I believe, something like that. I think grouse hunting will be good also, not sure what other birds reside there.

Good luck, big decision to make. Good outdoor state to possibly retire in. Wouldn't want the cold and snow though.

Careful about call a cheesehead a flatlander. Dems fighten words. In WI we call flat landers FIBs (f#@king Illinois bast$#*s) don't get me wrong, nothing personal.

IF.....we end up in Wisconsin it would most likely be in Florence or Marinette counties in the Northeast.

The reason for moving to that area would be to be in close proximity to my wife's family. Here 3 sisters are older that her and are all retired now and she would like to be able to spend time with them with the least amount of driving between them.

Not much available currently, but that is to be expected as we get deeper into winter.

Hopefully spring will bring some new inventory. That said, we would prefer a private "By Owner" purchase if possible.

got a buddy that has a place in Vilas Co, about 8 miles from the UP. have fished up there several times. you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a lake in that area and there are plenty of deer too. Lee

I reckon you ain't never read the Snuffy Smith comic strip. We get flatlanders moving here in the Blue Ridge mountains as well. They identify themselves by constantly hitting the brakes while going down our "little" hills. :)
