We had to put our lab Belle down 3 months and 3 days ago. I wasn't ready for another dog and wanted to hold off until Spring, but Mrs Chad NEEDED another dog and couldn't wait. I thought a smaller breed would be better, but the Mrs wanted a yellow lab female. I put my foot down and folded like a cheap suit!

Meet Scout, our new 8 week old female Yellow Lab. A couple licks on my nose and I was smitten. Round trip to get her was about 4-1/2 hours and she barfed on Mrs Chad on the way home - IN MY TRUCK! :D

She likes her new lawn...

So far, she's pooped twice and pee'd about five times; all in the yard! No accidents in the house so far (knock on wood). I put her up on the bed with me and she snuggled up and took a 45 minute nap while I watched golf on TV. WHAT A GOOD DOG!

She was accustomed to competing for food with her littermates and is now enjoying here first uncontested meal. She takes a few bites, runs into the great room, rolls around on the carpet, runs back to her bowl, has a few more bites and repeats the routine. The Mrs and I have been laughing like idiots and are thoroughly entertained! This may work out after all...

These were the ground rules I emailed to my wife, before we got Scout:

------------------------

Please forward this to our future puppy...

CHAD'S DOG RULES:
1. NO peeing, pooping or barfing in the house. If you must do those things, do it in the yard.

2. Do your business (see #1) between 5am and 7pm. We're old and we need our sleep.

3. No begging for people food. I won't pester you while you're eating; please extend the same courtesy to us.

4. NO drooling on the floor (see rule #3).

5. Be calm when we trim your nails, clean your ears or wipe your parts. I have much more efficient ways to torture you if that's my intent.

6. We are NOT napkins or toilet paper. The same holds true for our carpet and furniture.

7. NO barking at people we allow into the house. Feel free to bark at people who intend to break in or mess with our stuff.

8. OBEY our commands. They are NOT suggestions...

9. Keep shedding to a minimum.

10. We MAY allow you a spot on the bed. If we do, be grateful! Do NOT lay sideways in the middle and try to push us out.

11. DO NOT expel contents of your anal glad in the house. That's disgusting...

12. If we let you out off-leash, stay close and don't leave the yard. Some of our neighbors are horrible drivers and have hit brick mailbox columns and had head-on collisions. We also have coyotes in the area and they don't deserve an $800 meal.

13. DO NOT chew on our stuff. That includes our treasures, our shoes, our furniture and our house. If you MUST chew on something, chew on your nails.

14. Thunder and fireworks won't harm you in our home. Go schizo and I may harm you.

15. Stay out of the basement, the garage and the gun room. There's NOTHING for you there.

Follow these rules and we'll get along fine...

My crystal ball sees lots of rule bending in your future. With a face as cute as hers and the antics she is capable of, your heart is going to turn to mush.

Is her forum name going to be s&wscout? :D

Beautiful Pup!!!

In all our married life (44 + years), my wife and I always had a Golden Retriever. Our last one (5th one), Cody passed about 3 1/2 years ago and broke our hearts. He did live for 13+ years and while all were great, he was the BEST! We had eventually planned to get another but have moved since then.

We now live in a gated community, have much less than our huge fenced in private yard we had up North, and quite honestly, we no longer want to be tied down. We now enjoy our freedom to get home when we want, to go on vacation and not have to worry about a dog.

That said, YES - we do miss having a furry friend a LOT! Sometimes I want to cave in and believe me, my wife would get another tomorrow. So far I have resisted. Funny thing is that many here in our community who have dogs now, say to us that this is their last dog too as they want their freedom as well. Again, it is a tough scenario and we do miss Cody terribly!!!

She's not interested in S&W's. It's just as well... If I gave her a nice holster, she'd probably chew it up!

We let her sleep on the bed with us last night and she did great. Got a little restless around 1am, was taken outside, promptly did her business and then slept in until almost 6 O'clock.
