I use Microsoft Works on my computer for all my word processing. Recently I sent a Works attachment via email to an individual, and he replied "I have been unable to open the attachment. Could you re-send it in Word?"

My computer is 10 years old and Word is not one of my programs. I don't want to buy the program because I'll be getting another computer soon. Any suggestions how I can get the document to this guy so he can open it up on his end?

I have Windows XP if that makes any difference.

Thanks,

John Gross

I would sincerely suggest that you look into Open Office. This is a free program that replaces both word and works... and can convert files back and forth. It is free, free, and then free. I have been using it for years. I believe their web site is openoffice.org or something close to that. Google will find it for you otherwise.

Inside MS Works, if you choose:

File -> Save As

and in the window that comes up select:

".rtf" or "Rich Text Format" (it will say one or the other)

then rename the file and click the "Save" button.

Your friend will be able to see the file just fine and it will save all your formatting correctly. Make sure the file is called "myfile.rtf" (doesn't have to be "myfile" but it does have to have the ".rtf" at the end of it.)
