Mod 28-2 Highway Patrolman

I have a question. I am the proud owner of a few Smith & Wesson revolvers. My last purchase is a Mod 28-2 Highway Patrolman from 1973/74. His number is N113XXX.
There is something wrong with this weapon. All his markings are white, including on the barrel. Was there a series of 28-2 or the markings were voluntarily bleached, or was it a former owner who liked white paint?

Nothing wrong. Like you said, prior owner chose to highlight markings. You can likely remove with acetone/toothbrush.

Probably just something a previous owner did. Most likely it's paint or even simply a wax crayon rubbed in. Acetone on a rag should remove it without damage to the finish.

Removing white markings

You may want to start with mild solvent first, as not to mar the surface. Different solvents work with different types of paint.
Alcohol is weak, mineral spirits for wax based, then acetone is strong. BE Careful!

And as you probably are aware, I'd remove the wooden grips first regardless what solution you use.

I recently acquired a K-38 with the same treatment. It came off with Rem Oil and a soft toothbrush. I think it was liquid paper/white out.

A lot of older military rifle owners do this with Lacquer stick to better see the markings.
