MOD 60 Info

Thinking about buying a model 60 with a 3 inch barrel, does anyone have any input on one, do they handle 357 mag. OK.

You'll have to look at the box or side of the barrel to see if it is chambered for .357 .

A small, light gun like a .357 J frame will be a double handful with full loads. The gun will handle it but the shooter will have lots of blast and recoil with it.

I have one (60-15) in .357. It makes a great outdoors/trail gun. It's also nice to teach new shooters with when loaded with some light .38s.

I put some thicker Pach Compacs on it. They help with the .357s, in my opinion, by giving a little more to hang on to. The stock rubber finger-groove grips aren't horrible, thouhg. Just a little to narrow for me when shooting the magnums.

I have never shot a 3" J-frame. I have a 60-9 2" and it's rough shooting .357. Has the original wood grips and it is bone jarring. 60-18 5" barrel is manageable with rubber grips. Ruger SP-101 3" is a much bigger, heavier gun than the J-frames. Still no picnic shooting .357 with Hogue rubber grip. IMO .357 needs a bigger frame and longer barrel to comfortably shoot a steady diet of .357.

I'll agree with everything that Sully8548 stated. I have a 2" 60-9 and a 3" SP-101. Neither is a joy to shoot with .357. Great revolvers.

Shot my 60-15 a couple weeks ago. Offhand it is a handful but not bad, and with the factory rubber grips. I had a 640-1 and changed out the Uncle Mike's grips for some Altamont boot grips, and the wider, harder boot grips were actually worse for me. That said, I usually carry +P factory defense loads, Hornady 110s or Buffalo Bore low flash. I leave the full 357s to the 686.

I had been shooting .357 Federal 158gr Hi-Shoks out of my 360sc (11oz ultralight) ... not a lot of .357's at a time, just my 5 carry rounds. When I first shot my new 60-15Pro, it was a joy by comparison! It really depends on what you're used to. But since then, I've bought a 686, and it IS very nice when shooting full-spec .357's.

I had a SW 340PD the 11oz ultralight 357. The recoil was brutal so I seldom had the desire to practice with it. Sold the 340 and purchased a model 60 in 357 for carry. A tad bit heavy for pocket carry but a good trade off.

My M60-10 is a joy to shoot .38Spcl.

It handles the .357 Magnums OK. The Hogue 'MonoGrips' make it tolerable.

This opinion coming from someone who doesn't like recoil.
