1 - Is the quality between the model 17 and 617 the same? The reason for asking is that there seems to be more Model 17s around than the 617.

2 - Why does it seem there aren't too many of the Model 17s available with the full lug?

3 - What is the going cost for a 17 with a full lug?

1-Since the full lug M17's and M617's are of the same vintage (for the most part at least, the M17's were discontinued some time ago while the M617's continue today), I'd say that quality - for when they were made at the same time - would be comparable.

2-See above, these were only made for a short time, the factory has been spending more time making SS guns due to customer demand, IMO.

3-Good question, since there is no real quantity to compare to, look at the M617 prices and adjust (upward) accordingly.

Pretty much have to echo what SmithNut just said.

I picked up a long tube full underlug in 17-5 this week. I can say that the quality of the fitment on the gun is very high. It's right there with my early postwar K-22's. I'm well pleased with the finish, very deep bluing and brite.

A blued gun is worth a premium against a stainless. Basing this on the relative scarcity. You'll see substantially more SS guns for sale and only the occasional blued full underlug.

I have a 617 and 17-6 of the same vintage and the quality. fit &finish is identical. NICE

Your right, there aren't many 17-6 full lugs around . They made them only for a short while.

I'd also like to know a going price, I'm getting ready to sell my 17-6 (full lug) now.

I read somewhere that 17 full lugs command slightly higher prices than the normal barrel versions.I don't know if that's true.

I sold one about a year ago for $525. I doubt if I could replace it for that amount now. The 17-6 also came with the Combat stocks which seemed to inc. the value a little.

I was looking for a 17-6 with box, papers, TH, TT, and Combats and it took about a month to find. It had been used in matches so it had a turn line but someone had performed a trigger job and it has an unbelievable DA trigger. It clearly outshoots my 17-4 with a much wider variety of ammo too. Now the tough one to find is a 14-5.

Since I am not interested in papers or the box hopefully it makes it a bit easier to find.

I have a 17-8 which I bought at a really good price a number of years ago. I didn't like the 10-shot alloy cylinder at all, it leaded up like crazy, so I sent it to the PC to refit a 6-shot SS cylinder. I thought the frame hole for the barrel was drilled at an angle instead of square. I guess S&W agreed with me because they replace the frame too, essentially building a new one-off gun for me. I wanted a SS cylinder because I thought the brushed SS cylinder would look better with the matte blue gun than a polished blue cylinder, no matte blue steel cylinders having been made by S&W. I have been very pleased with this one! The underlug adds a little too much weight for a field carrying gun unless you are using it as a dedicated hunting revolver. I prefer a Model 18 or a Single-Six for that, but it is a great range gun.

When I ran across a like new 17-8 last Summer for $500. I just bought it. Would have prefered the 4-inch but the 6 shoots just fine.

model 17 purchase

Hey fellows, just to add a little price info to the thread, I purchased a very nice Model 17-6 full lug today at a local gun show for $ 525. It wasn't a steal but I certainly thought it was reasonable. No papers or extras but I think it would grade 98+.

Mr. Bang, $350 would have been a rub, $525 is just plain info. I frequently read these post where folks find nice guns for half price from friends, pawn shops, shows, etc. For some reason I've never been that lucky! take care-

I bought a 98% 17-6 for my wife today at Scheels for $349.00. TH, TT, Combat Grips. Dirty, but like new when cleaned. I guess I'm rubbing it in? One of the best deals I've come accross in a long time!
