Yes, it is a jig hole. And yes, it was common during the first half of the 1950s. Yours is about as late as I've seen. In my experience, most of the model marked units don't have the jig hole.I've seen a few with this same hole and I assume it was a factory jig mounting hole. Is this common?

I see it also has the adjustable trigger stop. Agencies removed them after reports of them getting loose, shifting and preventing the trigger from coming completely to the rear.
Don't know when S&W stopped installing them..but I liked mine for bullseye competition.
