Model 28 vs ruger security six

Model 28 or security six

You won't wear either of them out. Those who are saying the Ruger is lighter and handier - while it is K frame size, it is heavier than a K frame S&W and I doubt there's much difference in it and a 28 with similar barrel lengths. I'll weigh mine when I get home. And my Security Sixes are as smooth as most S&Ws, maybe just my examples, but there's not much to complain about on the S/S action, in my opinion - I have two and recently sold a 3rd one to someone who just had to have my 2 3/4" blued one. My pre 27 has has a somewhat better double action, but it's not world's apart.
One other caveat, though - Ruger no longer services or sell parts for the Six series guns.

I voted for the 28 even though I don't care for N frame 38 or 357 guns.
Just never got the warm fuzzy over a Ruger DA revolver. Owned 4 of them and the only one that got me to smile was the Redhawk in 45 Colt. Still liked the Blackhawk in 45 Colt better though.

I'm curious, what grips do you all like for the N frame? I have 3 sets, the magnas in the picture, a set of stock target grips and a hogue mono grip. I have a hogue on my j frame that I love but the larger version just doesn't feel right. I haven't shot it yet but the targets feels best in hand.

Fwiw I wear size large gloves. Not sure why the hogue doesn't feel right?

A grip adapter and the magnas might just be perfect for you.

Tyler T-Grips are great, but new orders are VERY slow to be filled. BK grips work well, are inexpensive and delivery is quick. There are others available second hand. The classifieds is a good place to look.

The photo below shows two K frames with adapters. Don't recall for sure which brand adapter is on which gun, but I think the blue Model 10 with stag grips has a Tyler.

I would compare the Ruger Security Six to the S&W L frame, Colt Trooper and Python, Trooper Mark III, just enough bigger than the K-frame M-19 to make it a true heavy duty .357, not quite an N frame.

This post is silly to me. But with some awesome responses.

I have a couple of both, I love. These are two great revolvers from 2 great companies.
In the past, I have said, S&W is a gentleman's gun and the Ruger is a working man's gun. But my 28's are tough as nails and my SS are slick as a seal. All four make tiny little groups.

It's like asking what color is better; blue or green.

When I bought my SS in 1971, the option was a Model 19. But it was about 60% higher in cost. I couldn't afford it on my college' kid's part time job.

Fast forward 50 years and now I have many S&W's, including a 19.

The funny thing is that when I take them all out to the range (now two handed hold at my age) the one that Always scores highest is my old 4" Security Six.

I have a tricked out 6" Model 19, trigger job and all, but it won't match my SS.

Maybe after the thousands of rounds fired down the tube, the trigger has fixed itself.

Congratulations on buying both. Be sure to give your thoughts on how they compare after shooting both. I'd guess you'll be happy with both but hard to compare because they're very different revolvers. Btw, the small Magna grips on my Model 28-2 didn't work for me so I put a Pachmayr Presentation (target type) on mine. It's a much better fit for my hand and I'm too cheap to pay $300 for OE S&W target grip.

After having both for a bit I am glad I bought both. The ruger has a much better trigger than I thought it would but definitely not as good as the 28. The extra heft of the 28 does make it easier to shoot 357. I tried the magna grips but they weren't great but I found a pair of worn target grips that feel pretty good. Somebody had taken sandpaper to them so they are a bit slimmer than they should be but they feel good.

My 28 has seen some use, it was used in the Caribbean supposedly by coast guard unit. No rust but LOTS of carry wear. I'm wondering if I should get it reblued or even try blueing it myself since it's already so worn and scratched. Options?

I own both! I got one of the first SS in 1972, got the 28 about 77.

Can not go wrong with either the 28 being a little bigger N frame will handle .357 loads all day. The Ruger is robust also but is equivalent to a Smith K frame. Proof of that is the Ruger fits K frame holsters and uses K frame speed loaders!.:)

Actually, the SS may work with a K speed loader but they use a Colt Mkiii loader if HKS and their own loader if Safariland. As for holsters, From experience the K holsters that work are pretty tight on a SS if they fit the K perfectly, Most K holster that are listed for both are a little loose on the K. The best Speed Six holsters I have are made for the Speed Six.

That said, Choosing between a SS and a S&W N is like choosing between a K or L and an N frame. It depends on what you want to do with it. For outside carry or if you don't mind the extra weight you can never go wrong with an N frame. If going concealed and/or if weight matters the SS is good. I loved my 4" N frame but as I got older I carried it less and less and my Speed Six more and more.

I have a 28-2 and several Rugers. My favorite is a Security Six, blued, 6-inch barrel. I have killed deer, hogs, and turkeys with it, and who knows how many small game animals.

I do not own a M - 28 or shot one. Do own a couple of Ruger Service Sixes and a couple of Security Sixes Had to vote for the Ruger. My S&Ws consist of 686+, 19, 10(s), and 36. I speculate that the 28 is an outstanding revolver as well.
