Model 28 vs ruger security six

Model 28 or security six

I'm quite sure the smarter fellows on the Ruger forum would choose the Model 28. If not, they just prove why they're on the Ruger forum snd not the Smith & Wesson forum, right? Hahahaha…

I didn't vote because there weren't enough options.

My very first revolver was a Security Six in 1971. As a college student I could not afford a Smith. I still have that revolver. It has had many thousand rounds sent down the tube. It's as accurate as any of my Smiths, and by now the trigger seems to be broken in quite well. I have many Ruger single actions, but the SS is the only double action.

In contrast, now that I'm not poor any more, I own a model 14, 17, 19, 25, 27, 28, 57 and a few Pre's as well.

Given the same choice 50 years ago, and under the same circumstances, and knowing what I know now, I would probably make the same decision. But today, given that choice, I would most definitely buy both.

BTW, I belong to the Ruger forum as well.

I've got nothing against Rugers. I had an SP 357 as nd still have a MKII and several rifles. I really like their SA revolvers. I've just always thought their DA revolvers were ugly. Especially compared to a Smith or Colt. I guess I'm just shallow haha

Ruger S-6 vs S&W 28 is apples and oranges. The 28 is better gun by far.
Accuracy, smoothness and durability is all there. Drawback would only be the size and weight. Only advantage S-6 would have is that it's smaller and lighter. I think several are confused as to what either revolver is. It's flat out ridiculous to think a S-6 could take more magnum loads than a 28. A S-6 would be more comparable to a 19 or Python. I don't think it would hold up against 586 L frame either.

I trust you will make the best decision for you. Variables include size, price point, user performance, DA/SA, bore axis/ergonomics, resale (if a thought), managed recoil, and possibly a few others.

Good luck; don't look back. You got this.

The Ruger Security Six is a nice gun, but if you could own a model 28 like one of these (in this case both are 1st year Highway Patrolman), or a SS, which one would you choose? The well used 1967 model 28-2 is still as solid as the day it was born. As an aside, Ruger DA revolvers are seriously ugly.

I have to admit the only reason I voted M28 is you said the price was the same. I'd expect the SS to be half the price of the M28, and then I might choose it if I wanted a smaller revolver.

It comes down to personal taste, I guess. As they say: "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder".

Glocks are ugly too, but that's simply an opinion.

I must say that I have seen some people and thought: "OMG, who would ever marry them?" Then I found out they WERE married. LOL

Quick follow up, I probably shouldn't have but I ended up also getting a ruger. Both are 4 inch barrels, the 28 was about$700 total and the ruger ended up around 550 total. Haven't gotten either one yet but I'll post pictures when I do.

The 28 has the magna stock grip and I bought a used set of herrin shooting stars for it.

The ruger has some ugly rubber grips and I found another used set of herrits for it.

An Unlikely, Yet Interesting, Comparison

Interesting comparison... I had never thought of looking at the two, side-by-side. I have both in 4" configurations and show them with similar, non-target stocks, to make the most even comparison.

My preferred pick is the 28-2, due to its better (for my hands) ergonomics. But, I will say the Ruger has a very excellent double action trigger (don't doubt me on this!) as well as a good single action pull.

I was a Ruger fan long before I discovered Smiths (and made more money!). I still love my Rugers, but they're simply not made at the same level as S&Ws. Sure, they're "built like tanks" but with as many revolvers I keep in shooting rotation, I have never -and will never, wear any of them out! :)

As others have said, buy them both!

That was my thought as well.

As another poster mentioned, if both 4" guns are the same price, the Ruger is either overpriced or the Smith is underpriced.

If both are in similar condition, I'd opt for the M28.

Got them both today. Initial dry firing and handling, the 28 trigger is NICE but the 6 isn't far behind. Much different feel in hand for sure, the 28 is hefty. I tried a hogue grip for the 28 and it just didn't feel right. Don't really like the stock magnas either so I'm not sure what I'll try next.
The 6 feels very good as is, I have a set of pachmyr grips for it but I think I'll keep the stock wood for now. It's serial is 152,xxx and I haven't looked up what year that means yet, anybody want to tell me it's age?

FYI the 28 was $700, the 6 was 600. I'm ok with those prices based on what I've seen both selling for.

I'm curious, what grips do you all like for the N frame? I have 3 sets, the magnas in the picture, a set of stock target grips and a hogue mono grip. I have a hogue on my j frame that I love but the larger version just doesn't feel right. I haven't shot it yet but the targets feels best in hand.

Fwiw I wear size large gloves. Not sure why the hogue doesn't feel right?

The Ruger is vastly inferior to the Smith & Wesson guns.
Off topic to the original ruger model, i have a 4 inch ss police service six and a 3 inch 1/2 lug gp100 both are quality firearms, the GP trigger is no where as nice as my smiths the police service six can hold it's own against any k or l frame i own. I don't know if the prior owner had any work done on it but the action is smooth lock up good and tight.
