Too easy. Get lucky, or whatever.

I posted a "want to buy" on a local NC gun forum this morning. Looking for a 4" Model 29, etc. picture of the listing below because this is a perfect match. Anyway, walked into Carolina Sporting Arms this afternoon and one of the guys said, "Hey, want to hold a 29-2?" It just arrived. Had not even been priced. It is perfect. A 4", no lock, looks great but not NIB. It is a shooter. I'll shoot it, hike with it, etc. It is 100% what I had in mind this morning. Made in 1973 or so.

* NOT looking for another Model 29. This is just to show the perfect match.

I read your post this morning and thought, "Good Luck". Nice find! That is amazing.

Patrick

Thanks and it's good to see somebody else from that forum over here. There are a few of us. The 4 inch barrel was a long shot. Definitely lucked out.

Looks better than shooter grade, you must have paid a dollar or two for something as nice as that one. Are you sure of the age? The speed loader cut stocks didn't come out until near the end of the 1970's, early '70s would have the football cut. The stock that are on it look great, though, some really nice color. Great find.

Thanks. It looks good. No doubt. By "shooter," I just mean that I am not destroying a NIB example. It's been gently used. There are a few blemishes that simply do not show up in the photos. Nothing significant. It's just the way that I like them. Prefer to shoot, carry, etc.

Regarding age, the serial number is N126XXX. That lines up with 1973 or so. Interesting about the grips. The detail about football versus speed loader cut is way above my knowledge level. If that the case, then these are probably not the original stocks. I agree though, about the color.

EDIT: Yes. Clearly not the original stocks. Not numbered, stamped Oct. 7, 1986.

4" Model 29

Nice find

I have a 6.5" nickel 29-2. Unfortunately it was refinished in the 70's. On the positive side it was done at the factory and it looks original but the stamp on the frame confirms a refinish. Mine was made in 1965 and has a pinned front sight and coke bottle stocks.

I worked at S&W around the time that your gun was made. The stock department was still making some nice Goncalo Alves and Rosewood target stocks at that time and I have a nice set of checkered rose wood that I put on my nickeled Model 27.

Yours is a very nice example of a P&R model 29. A nice set of matched grain smooth Goncalo Alves or rosewood target stocks.
would look great.

I have fired a mountain of .44 Special and reduced charge .44 Mag reloads from my Model 29 and Super Blackhawk. I use home cast 225 grain Kieth SWC for both .44 Special and Mag with data from the Lyman cast bullet manual.

The .44 Mag is a great caliber. Very versatile of you reload.

Good Luck with yours

Ryan...Nice looking 44 Magnum that dates to 1974. The photo below shows stocks that are correct for your new 44 Magnum. Note the area where the stocks meet the trigger guard.

Bill,

Thanks very much. Thank dor confirming date and stock info. Looks like I have period correct stocks in my "bucket of grips." Will probably leave these in place for now and maybe replace with rubber for hiking.

Execellent, beautiful 4". Merry Christmas to you! Price?

$1050. What do you think? Too high. Too low?

Shop was going to tag it at $1200 but offered it to me when I walked in the door. Again, I was specifically looking for this gun. It was right there in my hand and looking good.
