purchased a model marked 34 no dash kit gun today. is a 2in. sq. butt, blue finish. box is marked in white grease pencil on bottom with the serial# of the gun. it has a white with blue printing label that was stuck on the end of the box that has something underneath it. my question is this: the serial # is 47565. the way I read the book, that is before model marking started. will get some pics in the next couple of days of box and gun. comments welcome.

Your probably looking at the J frame serials in the SCSW,
If you look on the same page lower right at 1953 .22-.32 kit gun serials yours is around 1958 (ish)

If I'm reading the 2nd Edition (Standard Catalog) yours would be on the I frame rather than J frame. J frame started at sn 70000. Your sn of 47565 would be post 1957 so should be marked as a model 34.

Engine49guy & Jeff are correct, your Model 34 pre dash # is built on the Model of 1953 'New' I frame which has the J frame size grip frame and trigger guard but still has the short main frame and cyl of the I frame. It became the full size J frame in Oct 1960 and got the dash 1.

I suspect your Kit Gun shipped in 1958, maybe 1959. Kit Guns got model numbers stamped on them sometime in 1958. My 2" Kit Gun is not model marked, shipped in January, 1958, according to Roy, and is slightly over 15,000 numbers lower than yours.
I hope this helps.

perrazi,

That's a screamer! A great find with a sq butt on the I frame too. If I had to guess gun-to-my-head, I'd say only one in ten
I frames had sq butts. Much more common once they became J frames but still in the minority.

many thanks to everyone that has helped out with info. I don't know much about the little guns, but seem to have accumulated a few lately.

I have noticed that. must be some sort of affliction or some such.
