Model 41 and CCI sv ammo

The old CCI Green Tag shot great out of my Model 41, out of several High Standards, and my Hammerli 208s loved it. The new stuff, which is called Green Tag, but isn't the same, not so much.

Like a lot of people, I go to Eley Tenex when I want to send the very best (see above).

CCI is good, but for top drawer accuracy, it's Eley. Eley isn't cheap and it can be confusing as the seem to make 20 different types, but when precision is the goal, it's the best I've found.

As I noted in a post above, my 41 dislikes anything but Eley. Cold weather made things that much worse. Could be the gun oil or bullet lube thickens. Or it could be lower velocity and less energy to function the action. I dunno. But Eley works fine in the cold. I shot a bullseye match yesterday at 34 degF. The 41 and Eley Target worked just fine. Accuracy with that combo is better than I am, so better grades of Eley are a waste on me. Had I used CCI SV yesterday, I'd have been in Alibi City.

My old model 41, which I purchased new in 1982, is one of the ones that does NOT like SV ammo. I used to shoot nothing but Super X HV, but the last 10yrs or so, I have shot CCI Blazer HV.
In all these years, and I shoot it a lot, I have never had a part fail.
The only parts I have replaced is a new std S&W recoil spring every year or two, just as a preventive maintenance thing.

He may have shot the other brands because they were cheaper. You can't hurt a 41 with any ammo, just some shoot better than others.

The 41s and 46s could get finicky at times but should shoot any decent quality SV ammo without a hiccup if kept maintained in original configuration and kept clean.

I noticed the guys that more often have issues are the guys who do not regularly field strip to clean.

We no longer have 41s, just 46s. All of them function flawlessly with any good quality SV ammo. I never tried anything more powerful than a SV in either my 41s or 46s.

That is Partially correct. A Constant line-up of HV ammo will hurt the gun quicker overtime and effect its accuracy as well. It will burn out the Barrel faster overtime.

I bought my M41 new in 1984. I bought a used second one in 1995 that dates to the original one. I am on my third case of CCI Blazer ammo. Yup, the cheap stuff. 99.99% reliable, more accurate than me, and neither gun is 'battered' from Hi Velocity ammo.

The Blazer ammo is not as hot as CCI Mini Mags. I clean my M41 at the practice range when I am done shooting before "tomorrow's" Bullseye match, then fire 1 mag of 10 rounds. When I get home, I thoroughly clean frame and slide rails, face of slide and extractor, 2 drops of oil on rails, and the gun is good to go for the match. I don't think I have had 5 alibies during a match in 30 years with my M41.

YMMV

Is the Model 41 typically that "fussy" about ammo? Maybe I am better off sticking with the more tolerant, less expensive target pistols.

Mine works well with CCI SV and the old discontinued Federal Target, but is fussy with other stuff. But it is such a great target pistol, yes it is worth putting up with it. Find what it likes, then buy by the case.

CCI works fine in my SW22

I realize that HV ammo is going to be harder on the slide and other parts of the gun But I would like to hear how shooting a lead bullet a couple of hundred feet per second is going to burn out a barrel.

I am not trying to be an idiot here I just want to hear your thoughts on this matter. I doubt you could ever burn out a 22 barrel with lead bullets but I am sure you can hurt them by improper cleaning or no cleaning at all.

HV ammo is always a much faster velocity over SV ammo. More heat and wear in shooting it in my opinion. Blazer ammo is made by CCI as well. I have a brick of it myself but find its not as accurate as the CCI-SV stuff. I mostly shoot that in My Annie rifle. Improper or No cleaning over time will take its toll on any barrel eventually. I like my toys too much to purposely abuse them that way.

Inherited a 41 from Dad along with several thousand rounds of .22lr. None of it CCI. Any thoughts as to why CCI is less troublesome?

(1) The average OAL and rim thickness of CCI SV matches up best with the "typical" M41 chamber.

(2) Most of the time, when people start whining about how "S&W is terrible and why does my $1900 Model 41 jam once every 250 shots it should be flawless", it's just easier to tell the idiot in question to use CCI SV, than it is to explain that Joe Bob's 9,999-round Bucket o' 22 Walmart Special is garbage. And yes, I know 41s don't cost $1900, but stupid and overpaying typically go hand-in-hand.

(3) CCI SV is pretty decent in the price/performance ratio, and is easy to find. Sure, lots of American-spec .22LR will work fine (there are some differences between American and European brands), but it's pretty hard to walk into a store and not find CCI SV paper box.

Pick one.

Wise A M41's do cost with tax's around $1900.00 here in Canada for a new one. They have been up at that price here for several years now.
