Back in 1978 - 1979 I spent weeks and weeks going back and forth debating what I should buy for a .22 Target Pistol. The two choices were the Hi Std. vs the M41. Long story short is I was leaning towards the Hi Std. because I felt it had a better trigger and was ever so slightly more accurate.
The DEAL BREAKER for me was the fact that the HS has the Slide Release on the right side of the gun and since I am right handed that was very awkward for me. The fact that the Mag. Release was on the bottom of the Pistol was the straw that broke the Camel's back (for me) and so I bough the M41.
I have had my M41 since 1979 and it has performed admirably for all those 40 years. I can shoot sub 1" 10 shot groups at 50 feet on most days and unless there is a faulty round, my M41 never has any malfunctions of its own. The only parts I replaced are the Extractor (used a Volquartsen forged part ) and I did but a new Sporter lightweight "Field Barrel" for it a few years back.
From time to time I shoot friends High Std. Pistols (and shoot them well) but I could just never get over the bottom mounted Mag Release and the Slide Release locations. Therefore, I do prefer the M41 - but if others are not bothered by the control locations like me, the HS is a superb (and maybe..... even a better) Pistol!
