Hello,
Is the model 60 a J frame? I see that the weight is more than a 642 which is a J frame but perhaps the difference is the steel vs aluminum. Seems to me that the 60 would handle better than the 642 due to weight and the factory grip. Thanks.

Not *A* J-frame.
Mod 60 is the stainless version of the Chief's Special Mod. 36, the original J-frame, and about the most common of all J-frames out there.
If you are new to them, do some more research before rushing into anything (not that you'll regret any choice of S&W, mind you).

Hi, the model 60 has been produced with 2 different J frames, the original and after 1996 the "J Magnum" frame. The latter is noticeably larger and has a cylinder window large enough for a .357-sized cylinder.

1. The grip frames are identical, and you can put either grip on either gun.
2. I havea 442 and a 3" Model 60 (.38 version) with adjustable sights. The 442 is a go-anywhere pocket gun par excellance, and my 60 is easier to shoot beyond 7 yards.

If both had the same barrel, sights, and grips (which you can do) that would only leave weight as the difference.
