I am lost on this one.

I am really falling in love with it, but, I don't want to make a bad choice of price vs. value.

This is an early 1978 production pinned model 63 .22LR in 4 inch stainless with some nice Herrett checkered grips, but no original grips.

What type of price range am I looking at for a good value?

Thanks!

Prices for 63s run the range. I've seen them with Pachmayrs , no box & such for $375 , and I've seen them in the box with tools & papers for $375.

$375 sounds like a good starting point.

thanks for the price range reference.... I think this guy is a little too proud of this one..... Asking $500 cash now....

He's not out of line, that's what I paid for my last one with perfect original grips, so he's high by about the price of a replacement set of grips for $50. There is your bargaining chip.

model 63

I have my model 63 I bought in 1979, pinned and recessed. I track the prices on the model 63 often. They have been selling around $550.00 on GB and other forums. Are they worth that, I don't know. I wouldn't pay that much for one. I think they are a $350.00 revolver.

+1 The biggest issue with the 63 is the very small number out there. It is definitely a sellers market.

You will have to be lucky and fast to snag them under the $500 mark. One here the other day in the classifieds evaporated @ $525 after 34 minutes of being posted.

Paid more than that for mine with original grips & box. Not a bad price if you want it. You'll soon forget what it cost after using it.........Its only money........and you'll make more of that next week.

factory grips have gotten a little pricey. They have become a factor in the value of the guns.

I will take a couple for 350-375. I would expect to see them 450-550.

Mine cost me $125.00

but it had been thrown out of a vehicle and hit the street...hard. $115.00 and a few weeks later, the factory techs at S&W had repaired it, cleaned the asphalt out of the scratches, and buffed it. I have not seen a #63 for sale locally for under $500.00 for several years.

It'd sell pretty quick on our local forum for $500. I doubt it'd make it through a weekend at a gun show out here.

Since I assume that you're buying it for you,for you to use for some time, not to sell it next week,Is the gun worth 500 to YOU? What the rest of us would pay, etc, doesn't really matter. Are there others in your area to select from? I think not.
From reading these forums, with a daily barrage of these value/worth/Did I pay too much? posts, I honestly know of no other commodity where everyone is so afraid of paying 10 cents more than someone else.
Signed,
Mr Grump ;-P

thanks Grump!..... er, I mean, camster....

I know what You mean.

I would be buying the model 63 to be a great target .22 for myself.

in the same sense, I don't love it so much that I want to pay 20%+ more than it is really worth.

One thing I love about buying guns at the right price is that You can use Your investments while they appreciate usually....

;-)

I can assure you that no one would be prying my minty 63 no dash from my hands for less than 500,and doubtful you'll see many sell for less than that online.
A safe buy,but you're not stealing it.....yeah, I know, that's a fun part too. ;-P

It isn't a great target .22, not in the sense that a K22 is.
It is a good target .22, and a great plinker.

I have had mine for 20+ years now, a no-dash with box and papers and pinned barrel. I have no recollection of what I paid for it, but I guarantee you that I've gotten many times $500 of enjoyment from it. I have probably shot it more than any other revolver I have ever owned. I taught my daughter how to shoot with it.

Don't let $50 keep you from a lot of enjoyment. Buy it.

I bought a no dash pinned barrel 63 with original grips, no box, in very good / excellent condition on gun broker two years ago for $500, plus $30 ship & $30 transfer. Not a screaming deal, but I wanted one, so I got one. I passed up a few minty models with box & papers that were a couple hundred more. It's a neat-o little revolver, like a miniature model 15. Very cool, and I like it way better than the new round butt - rubber grip model 63's. The 617 K-frame stainless 22 is probably a better all around gun, but the 63 is just nifty.

Looking at the forums and gujn Digest, trhey like some of the vintage 22's are not on every street corner. I am amazed at the scarcity of the mod 35 and many of the classic and loved 22's. I agree it would bring the price here. The herrett grips are also excellant.
