I have a nice one I have owned about 1.5 yrs. now. Very clean, anyone else have one or ever see them? I understand they were made about 3 or 4 yrs, back in early 70's, then all 4" went to heavy barrel.

One of my holy grails, I can find mod. 10s w/ standard bbl. easy enough but I'm looking for a standard bbl. 64. Saw an excellent one in CA but had to travel 600 miles to get it. Way too far to do it once, let alone twice (ten day waiting period!).

There are two near me in the 350 range,
Seems there arent too many, but they pop up!
Peter.

Okay. My 1972 4" Model 64.

I believe they made them from 1970 to well into the mid 1980s concurrent with the heavy barrels.
They're available, but you don't see them for sale too often as those that has them keeps them.

According to the SCS&W 3rd Edition the taper barrel was dropped in 1973, possibly 74.

They do state that the -2 engineering change (1977) involved the gas ring on the 2" taper barrel models. Seems odd that that would be the case if the taper barrel was dropped 3-4 years earlier.

My own Model 64 no dash, serial# D6112XX comes in as a 1973-74. I've never seen a taper barrel Model 64 with a serial number that puts it any higher than those years.

I don't have the 3rd edition, only the 2nd, and mine says the heavy barrel came out in 1974, but no mention of dropping the taper barrel. But you could be right. Odd about the '77 mention, but with Smith, nothing is cast in concrete.
Mine are both from 1972.

I had no interest in the standard barrel until I bought one b/c it was cheap. Now I have an interest in these 64's.

Talk about a nice carry gun!

I have one I happened upon in a local shop a few years ago. It came with box and papers and was unfired. That was the first one I had ever seen except for in my 1975 "Shooters Bible". I have hesitated to shoot it since it is not very common and it is in perfect condition. The only other one I have seen was in a gun shop in Greenville, SC a couple of years ago. If I had had the money at the time I would have bought that one. I paid a bit under $400 for mine. My old 1975 "Shooters Bible" shows one one in the S&W section. The price was listed as $135.00. I have often wished I had a couple of thousand and a time machine! A Python for $230! But, I was making about $3000 a year I believe as a sailor in the USN.

I started another thread on the 64 this morning, and will ask the same question on this thread. The front sight appears to be an integral part of barrel. Were they machined from the same piece of steel, or is the front sight silver soldered to the barrel?
