Model 645 Serial range.first production.

Hi Ron,
The TAS prefix dates to late 1986, and TBR dates to 1988. According to the Standard Catalog of S&W 3rd Edition, the first serial range was TAK0001-TAK7727.
Well I've got TAK069*. Anyone got an earlier one? GARY

Well its been awhile for 645's, ACQUIRED This week from the Chicago P.D. S&W REP. FROM 1986 THE SALES SAMPLE 645 MODEL.NEW COND WITH 2 MAGS.It just came out of the woodwork after 37 years.sometimes we get lucky, but what :)a wait. RON K.

I'm also in the "TAR" serial range myself on my 645 (TAR33**).

Mine has the total wraparound Pachmayer grip on it currently but I'm chasing a set of nylon OEM S&W grip panels.

4 weeks ago,I bought TAR8199.

I was browsing the local gun shop. That's always a bad idea. I spotted my/the 645. I'm pretty sure it was a cop gun. The rear sight was battered, as was some of the checkering on the back strap, it has the idiot scratch on the frame. 3 mags, no box. $479 in October of 2023; that's not a bad price, I thought.

Hard telling when the last time this thing had been fired. When I got it home I loaded it up with some of my Lyman SWC reloads and got to shooting. I have put 5 shots under 2 inches at 25 yards. Ok, I only did that once (so far). But it happened. Most 5 shot groups go 2.5 inches at 25.

I had 40-50 rounds through the 645 when I realized that I hadn't even bothered to lube it. It was perking along just fine, bone dry.

I had read a million times: bla bla bla Boat Anchor. Bla bla bla Boat Anchor. Mine weighs slightly less than my 1911. Your results may vary.

Sorry I'm late to the party. Could someone repeat when the TAR guns were made?

Thanks, Rod.

I have a TAM. Bought it a few years ago, magnificent pistol!

Mine is a TBB1686. One of the hardest to read serial number stampings of all my Smith Autos. It is in my top 3 favorites. Loaded out the the 645 is almost the same weight as my 5906TSW. Of course the 5906 accommodates a lot more misses.

I have one with a difficult to read serial too. Mine is TBF75xx, but you have to get the light on it just right to fully read it. The shop I bought it from must not have used good lighting, they sold it as TRF75xx. I doubt anything has been done to it that would damage the serial number, it's a law enforcement agency trade-in, complete with agency roll marks.

I love 645s but that Phillips head screw on the right side safety always looked out of place, I think. Torx were out before the mid 80s. Why didn't they go with that?

I shot that group a few days ago. I started out with a clean gun.

My guess is that S&W went with Phillips head screws because most purchasers would have such screwdrivers on hand, but not as likely to own a set of Torx wrenches.
