If any of you followed my Colt government .380 saga, you’d know I had that gun on consignment the past couple weeks. It finally sold, so I had some money burning a hole in my pocket. Showed up to the shop yesterday when they opened at 9 to peruse what they had for hood used guns (I rarely buy new ones).

I was originally after a M&P 40, because I don’t have a 40 S&W yet and the ammo is very available… but the M&P sold.

They had a flat latch mode 36, serial started in 28 so I think it was a 53-55 YOM, but it was very dirty, the lockup was ok but not great, and the bluing had spots in the “nostril” behind the trigger guard that looked weird… while I don’t have a flat latch, it was more than I wanted to spend in that condition. So I kept looking- Nickel model 12 snubbie… very nice! But more than I wanted to spend. Had a Decent model 10 4” barrel, but I just bought a nice Military and Police 5” barrel, so I passed on that.

They have like 6 kit guns various years, one nickel 4” barrel, a flat latch 4” barrel, and a few others- all way more than I was going to spend…

Then as I was about to give up hope, I saw a polished stainless humpback… I’ve been after a “humpback” for a while, really wanted a blued model 49, but this stainless one was so shiny, I had to look. It’s a mid to late 80’s (I believe) high polish 649-1 in 38 special +P… it was clean, lockup is tight, looks well cared for, no Hillary hole, hammer mounted firing pin… price was right… sold!

So here it is! Serial number starts with BFKxxxx so if anyone has info on year etc let me know

I paid $599 plus tax, and I think I did great. That’s only $100 more than I paid for a worn but tight 3” J frame around Christmas.

Very nice GT_80! Congrats.

I see my Standard Catalog across the room and will check the serial #.

ETA: I didn’t see BFK in the Standard Catalog, but there are BFx in 1989, 1990, 1991, with the most BFxxxxx in 1990. There is BEKxxxx in 1989, maybe double check the #?

Looks like a twin to my 649-2 last week. A lucky find in today's market. I fired one round of Speer Law Man 125g JHP +p for proof test and it passed, but I will not do another unless compelled by situation ( not at all likely ).

The J-frame BFK serial numbers in my database suggest 1991.

S&W launched the 649 in '85, and it went about three years before the 649-1 appeared -- usual for J-frames of that era to get a dash number in '88.

I haven't found a 649 (or -1) that I wanted to "pay" for, yet. You did well on the price.

Enjoy.

Pretty sure it’s BFK 6FCFD12D-DF33-4B62-90C8-D33AEE443451.jpg

I got my new grips for this guy today. I thought the figment was poor, but when you tighten them on the gun, they’re snug, and don’t move. These are PMG grips off eBay, not bad for $35- laminated and machines Rosewood.

Also, maybe the 7991 in the frame is the day, month, year of manufacture?
