I'm looking at a Model 65 with a 3" barrel which is for sale on a local gun board. No box or papers, but it has original grips. It appears to be a -3 or -4 version with a mag-na-ported barrel. Looks like it's been used very little. Could the experts here give me a fair price range for said pistol?

I'm trying to decide between it and a 9mm Shield as a second carry gun. I already have a J-frame as a EDC and a Model 27 with a 5" barrel, but no K-frames yet.

Thanks for your help!

It depends on whether you think the Magna-Porting adds, subtracts or is neutral on its value, but I would say $525 +/- 50.

I contacted the seller to get some additional information. We'll see if he responds.

Based on the two responses so far it seems that the one I'm looking at is overpriced as it is a good bit north of $600. I don't know how willing the seller is to haggle.

Porting is unfortunate. Additional noise for additional cost.

It sounds like the price would be a bit high for an unported model; I guess it's up to you if porting is net gain or loss.

I would take a pass on that particular gun because of the Porting. I see more harm then good with ported guns and especially in the 3" M65 which has a short barrel to start with. Keep looking and you'll find a better example of a M65 which in my opinion is a must have S&W.

In the mid 80s .... the thing to do, according to the "gun rags" for a cool carry gun was take a 3" 65...... get a trigger job, bob the hammer/DAO, red ramp front sight and magna-port it......... add Spegel boot grips and a Sparks Summer Special holster........

30 years later still a great gun to shoot and carry..... would I have done anything different....... ya...... skip the Magna-porting..... doesn't do a thing when shooting the FBI load...... and is loud and adds a lot of flash w/ .357s.

Haven't bought a "gun rag" in 10 years........ better information here!!!!!

Around here a LGS would be "asking" somewhere in the high $500 range..... would take $525-550.

Bought a second 3" 65 earlier this month...... first one I've seen in 6-7years..... and I've been looking

In my home area you have a better chance of finding hen's teeth than a 3" 65 or 13. Would be $600 ball park even with the porting. I don't know how often you see the 3" K's near your home but you might want to grab it. You could always explore a barrel swap later on.

I've been perusing 3 local gun shops twice a week on the hunt. Hasn't been any used guns come into any of the 3 shops in over a month.

I heard back from the seller and it is a 65-3. However, it seems he won't budge on the price. It's more than I wanted to spend anyway so I'm going to pass on it.

With a few rare exceptions Smith revolvers around me seem to be in the stratosphere for pre-lock models.

I don't think we are going to see any decrease in pre-lock S&W prices. Especially on the "in demand" models.

Regarding the gun in question, I'd be more concerned w/ the porting, & general condition - then the price. The 3" K frames, seem to be appreciating about 15 - 20% per year.

Another option, might be a 3" / HB / RB / Mod. 64 in .38SPL.. Essentially the same gun, but a bit more reasonably priced (so far), due to the perceived limitations of the "lighter" caliber.

I sent this NIB 64-3 to a gent in TN, about a month ago. Seems to be a pretty good shooter.

Just a .38 I know, but hey... ;=]

Brief unrepentant threadjack: is that a Gary C's Avenger holster? If so, how do you like it?

(Given your screen name, this is where you tell me you're Gary C... :p)

Not sure who made it, but it does sorta look like an Avenger - of sorts. The pics were sent to me by the gent in TN, that bought the gun.

His holster, his groups, & his 64-3 (now)...

No, I'm not GaryC the holster guy (sorry), but I have been thinking about a Lobo Enhanced Avenger - off & on.

Agreed. The M65 is among my favorite S&W revolvers for daily carry. A three inch, round butt, M13 is on my belt as I type, in fact (see my avatar), which is the blued steel version of the M65. I have an M65 as well, though, also featuring the three inch barrel and round butt frame.

I've got a 64 just like that as well, and am about as fond of it as I am my 13 and 65. All three are three inch, round butt. Great configuration for a concealed carry K-Frame.
