I had the good fortune to get a good deal on a used model 66-1. I checked it to the limit of my ability and it seemed sound but in need of a good cleaning. When i got it home and started cleaning it I discovered that the cylinder would sporadically lock when you dry fired in either single or double action. I soon discovered that moving the cylinder the slightest little bit counter clockwise (from the shooter's perspective) would allow the pistol to function correctly. Without that little assist, it would "fire" once or twice or not at all before locking.

I will be taking it to a 'smith tomorrow but would like to have some idea of what could be the problem before I get there. As always, thanks for any help you can offer.

few things

It could be a few things,

I would check the yoke screw for tightness
after the yoke was cleaned.

Any dirt or grime under the extractor star

also check to see if the cylinder stop is working properly

Also clean the inside cylinder very well, if you know how to take it apart, this may be were the gremlin lies.
