So I found out the 69 has a two piece barrel.

Does that mean the outer barrel can never be canted?

How does this fit onto the gun?

Thanks

The barrel proper threads into the frame, the shroud goes over this and the end cap threads into the muzzle (either the barrel or shroud, not sure which) to secure everything in place. Someone here who has taken one apart can tell you about the possibility of canting the shroud, which has the front sight blade attached to it.

You know, thats something I never thought of. If the shroud is just a sleeve and the inner part (barrel) holds it in place, It seems that the sleeve would be made to lock in to one place only and line up perfectly every time eliminating canted barrels. hmmm. I would also like to hear from someone that has experience with 2 piece barrels.

In theory unless the shroud or frame alignment tabs are machined incorrectly you should "never" (oh I hate that word) get a canted barrel. Also just as a point of clarification the 69 does not have an end cap. The barrel has a step on the outside front that pushes back on the shroud as the barrel is tightened in the frame. The tool for screwing in the barrel looks like a long rifled (or reverse rifled in this case) rod which is inserted in the barrel and used to tighten it.

So with the tool and a torque wrench you could reduce the cylinder gap by facing the shroud.

I have two S&W model 64-8s with this type barrel. They are extremely accurate with just about any ammo. One is my IDPA revolver and the other is used for steel challenge matches. I have shot over 6000 of my own reloads in IDPA and several hundred +P and +P+ rounds through my IDPA revolver with no problems at all.

I recently purchased a 5" 686 Pro model. Although new, it had a canted barrel shroud. After two trips to the factory, all is well. Canted barrels still happen.
