Hurricane Helene winds did a good bit of damage to trees in our northeast Georgia mountain community and many homeowners here are still cleaning up as well as dealing with falling leaves. I drove up Sunday to deal with this but it rained for two days. I started yesterday afternoon by blowing leaves so I could move freely picking up limbs and sections of tree trunks. It took me about thirty-five minutes.

I moved next door to the neighbors yard and blew that too, as I have to cut up the broken trunk of her tree that fell on our property. Her husband passed away in October 2023 so I have been helping her maintain the yard.

I heard a woman screaming over the sound of my Echo leaf blower. She was about fifty yards away at a VRBO. I asked if she were hollering at me and she screamed I had been running that thing for hours and she didn’t pay good money for a mountain retreat rental to be bothered. She said cut it off or I will call the law.

I informed the female dog that she chose a community of single family homes to stay in and homeowners would not be tiptoeing around renters but will carry on daily tasks whether it bothered her or not. Her husband said he didn’t like my “tone”, so I suggested he load his dog and belongings up in the car and go back home.

Well, those entitled folk called the homeowner and reported my harassing behavior. He called me and asked why I bothered them. I explained the situation. He tried to defend their point of view. I am not having that. After lunch I am going to the county planning and development office with a copy of his VRBO ad, stating the place sleeps ten. That home was originally a one bedroom/bath with a kitchen and a great room. The septic system was never upgraded so I am positive the county will be demanding an immediate and expensive upgrade.

Make sure to start more leaf blowing,
EARLY EVERY DAY.

Anything needing a chain saw ? ?

Bekeart

Yes, and I brought two and they will be put to use as soon as the leaf covered bank dries out. What I don’t understand is why those renters believe I am doing this for kicks, rather than out of necessity. The driveway to that VRBO was blocked for several days following Helene and they were stuck. No power, no water, no egress.

You must be a kind and generous person.

"Moron" doesn't begin to cover it.

After reading your post, a lexicon of terms appeared in my mind for these folks. Much harsher. Harsh enough to get me banned from this forum if I posted them.

I am hoping they leave soon if they haven't already.

Nuthin' wrong with using a rake and a push broom. Better for neighbor relations not to mention muscle tone for off hand pistol stability.

I'm sure her husband wouldn't like my tone either. But, next time I wanted to run a blower or chain saw I would be wearing ear muffs to block out ALL the noise.

I try to get along with all my neighbors and for the most part do. But a guy running a short term rental located near me is NOT my neighbor. He might have neighbor's wherever he lives but I am not there.

Did you tell them to get off your lawn too. What a grump!!!!! Just kidding. It’s hilarious that the woman thought her vacation was somehow more important than you maintaining your property. These VRBOs and ABNBs are a problem that is reaching its pinnacle. Many vacation hot spots won’t allow them anymore

I would say your initial assessment of their character to be quite accurate, both the temporary tenants and property owner! Many would have told the woman to commit an un-natural act upon herself, or to go to.....never mind.

Why did you say you were harassing them? The only issue you have is to be sure you are doing such work during legally acceptable hours per noise ordinances for the community.

The property owner is the only one probably doing anything wrong by violation of zoning ordinances by using a single family property as a short-term rental. This is what you need to discuss with the zoning commission, You were nothing wrong. You have nothing to defend.

First, I would have done EXACTLY what you did, or worse for them! I MIGHT have told her that if she didn’t want to hear the noise, they could give me $300-500 (whatever you think it would cost to hire someone else to do the work at a later time), and you would be more than happy to oblige them! If that works for you, of course.

The county was very interested

This property has not registered as a rental with the county. The website has been up a few years. I told the clerk the name of the homeowner across the road, as he has game cameras aimed at the game trail that runs right along the driveway of the VRBO house. Dates/time/photos of cars and license plates have been recorded.

Someone asked about county rules and regulations; those are supposed to be mailed to me next week.

Another person suggested a yard rake and push broom would work better for fitness and neighbor relations. A yard rake is not very efficient on a thick mat of wet leaves and renters are not neighbors.

These ABNB and VRBO folks expect the HOA to come to their aid if there are problems with their rentals. That doesn’t happen due to possible legal issues. A few renters got educated about this after the hurricane. I have not heard of any residents being purposely hostile to renters, mostly they are ignored.

It has been suggested that ignoring visitors might run off a few potential home buyers as well as speculators. That doesn’t seem to concern anyone here.

I appreciate the responses.
