I think the model 38 Bodyguard revolver is the most ugly revolver in the S&W line. That "hump" in the rear to cover the sides of the hammer makes it look like somebody forgot to finish machining the frame. Even non-gun people think they look ugly or atlease weird. Even my wife calls it the "ugly one".

I personally think they are ugly in appearance too but are very functional. It is the only small frame revolver I carry regularly now. It's the gun I carry when I don't feel the need to carry a gun. The covered hammer makes it very user friendly in the pocket.

Back 20+ years ago it was my first serious carry gun. Back then I even carried two of them (one in IWB and one in my ankle) at times when I was going to drive a lot. Once or twice I stuck a third one in my back pocket as a "back up". Twice this revolver saved my bacon and I will never be without atleast one in my safe.

Here are pics of my model 38 that I got back in 1988.

Ugliest

That's a beautiful S&W because there is no "Klinton Hole" above the cylinder release. I think the current Smiths with the hole are the ugliest because of the hole and the reason it's there! I probably own a hundred Smith revolvers but none with "the extra hole" in the frame and never will.

the bodyguard is not ugly to me i would have to say the ugliest are the ones with the hole to they still make some nice looking ones if they take the hole off the side

I have to agree. The Bodyguards is ugly, but that is what I carry.

Bodyguards are ugly, true. However, I think that the 2" models 625-10 and 325PD beat it for pure visual "aaaaaaargh!" I'd include the gigantic X-frame hunting models with their various attachments, but that's a whole different class of ugly. I once contemplated buying a 625-10, and my brother threatened to disown me if I did!

Naaaa ... they are not ugly. I like the stainless critters. I carry the 649-3 which doesn't have that hole thingie on the side. my wife has the 638 with the hole. Every week we just squirt in more motor oil into the hole & like the Enegizer bunny "it keeps on going".

That's some fancy photography!!!

Thanks but I didn't do it.
I had a local professional photographer photograph couple of my favorite guns recently. I'm having them printed to 11"X14" and framed to hang on my den. They do look real nice... even my wife likes them.

Nice 38! I love that look. Wish I had one. I have a 638-IL that I've been trying lately to get to jam so I can send it back to the mother ship for, oh maybe a 642/442 NL. But the dang thing keeps gobbling up everything I feed it. My hand gets to hurting!

As a happy owner, I'll 2nd the 296. All the styling of a bodyguard without the benefit of the exposed hammer. Would it really have been that tough for Smith to go the centennial route with it? LOL

I've carried one of those ugly 638's almost daily for a little over 8 years. The finish isn't too durable, but the gun sure is.
