Most ugly revolver in the S&W line?

When I first saw this, I said "What the fudge?!"

WINNER!!!!!

Another vote for the 296.

I thought the Bodyguard was ugly so I bought a new Model 36 back in 1976. I carried it as a BUG for several years, but my outlook on life changed enough over the next few years that when the 649 was first introduced, I thought S&W must have been thinking of me. I bought the first one I saw and carried it until the 940 was introduced. I now carry a 642. I think all J frames are beautiful and I still have all my old ones.

The bodyguard is an ugly gun, but I respect it because it can be cocked, and fired from your pocket easier than any other model produced, just something cool about that. As far as the ugliest gun produced would have to be the 629 that was factory duracoated olive drab with a black cylinder.....this was disgusting to see.

I vote for anything with the "hi-viz" front sights. The lock was one thing but those sights are just absurd. They really don't work on shotguns, I can't imgaine they'd be any use on a shor barrelled handgun.

The 396 44 spl wins hands down. Somebody find a picture!

I disagree. I have a 296 and a 396.
The 296 takes ugly to a level only someone who sees one every day can appreciate.
I still refuse refuse to photgraph my 296, it is just too damned ugly to be in print.

This doesn't even make a 5 on the ugly scale for me:

Hmmmm, I'll just add a personal opinion, anything with a Hi-Viz sight fits into the ugly category.... yuck....
These things are fantastic to shoot, but I buy guns for many reasons, high on the list is aesthetic appeal, and for this reason alone I stay away from Hi-Viz models.....

Give me a good Bodyguard anyday.....

Do these qualify at the in between, or just plain ugly?

This is as far as I go, and only because of the way they shoot.

No, those aren't in between, I'll give them a 7.5 on the ugly scale.
Someone at S&W missed the boat with those. Unfluted cylinders would have bumped them to at least a nine. ;)

Bodyguards are ugly, true. However, I think that the 2" models 625-10 and 325PD beat it for pure visual "aaaaaaargh!" I'd include the gigantic X-frame hunting models with their various attachments, but that's a whole different class of ugly. I once contemplated buying a 625-10, and my brother threatened to disown me if I did!

I kind of like the Bull dog look of the 625-10.

I have several Model 49s and 649s, wouldn't take for them.
Great in a big jacket pocket in the winter.

Now don't go picking on my model 10s. :) I love those guns.

All these customized guns don't really count. The question was, "Most ugly revolver in the S&W line?" I'd take that to mean only current production models. For my money, all the new K frames that look like this are the ugliest:

The curve at the top of the frame where the hammer is, is just wrong. It makes it look like some kind of Spanish knock-off or something. I don't really even care that it's that way because of the internal lock - the lock itself doesn't bother me one way or the other. But changing the profile of the frame - ick.

Oh Geee Whiz, all these ugly comments make me feel really ugly bad. In fact its about midnight here & I think i will go out in the back yard & crank off 5 rounds through my 649 just so that it knows i'm thinking of her. Fuuy... on the neighbors that are sleeping. Allen-frame is that a "beer can opener" on the front of your gun ? That critter is way so cool. Here is a "Purty Pickure" of my 649 with its "Speedo Friend". Keep them ugly pictures coming ya'all, & good nite. Theres gota be a prize for the ugliest.. ugliest of them all. Suggestions ?

I wish I could show you the ugliest Smith I've seen but it's been sitting in a local pawn shop for many months and will probably be there for many more.
It's a M19-5 and the poor thing just can't help being so ugly. The previous owner somehow managed to put a hideous barrel with a tac rail on it that is a completely different color from the gun frame. It has interesting rubber grips and it appears that the trigger has been tampered with.
I feel so bad for it because M19s are normally what I would consider one of the most beautiful wheel guns produced by Smith...but this one is like the little retarded child of the family that everyone just humors because they feel bad for it. :o
The pawn shop owner knows no one is going to buy it but there it sits on display...for a good $500, too.

I like the Body Guard. I have a mint model 38 from '69. My only complaint is that it hurts to shoot it with the factory grips.

AKAOV1MAN;

NOT an old MSP but I am older. Had a friend who worked for MSP. The guns were carried in the front pocket as you mentioned. The trousers had a holster sewn in the pocket. The guns were the lightweight version of the Bodyguard with a stainless cylinder. The guns were used for qualifying as well. The would be well worn after many years of use for qualifications. Smith made the guns for the MSP but not exclusively. I don't believe the guns were marked with special markings. Hope this helps.
