Music You Enjoy

Quite aside from the music, that's nice gear! A good set of cans and dedicated amp is a wonderful way to listen.

I tried HD 650s as they are very highly regarded but found them a bit laid back for my ears, so went back to the Grado cans I'd used for monitoring and editing for a long time. (I'm mostly a classical and jazz guy but good gear brings out the best in anything that is well engineered.) A couple of years ago I picked up a pair of their GW100 wireless Bluetooth cans and absolutely love 'em. I lent them to my neighbor and she said, "I've never heard music sound like this!" :D

My first "quality" set of headphones were Grado 225's. I still have and use them. My early experiences with Sennheiser cans were likely exactly the same as yours. They were one of the 500 series closed back models. The "Sennheiser Veil." If you're coming from the lively spirited Grado house sound, many Sennheiser cans will sound like anything above 3 KHZ has a thick veil between you and the music. For the life of me I couldn't figure out why the Sennheiser cans were so popular and praised. They were missing half the music!

I suffer from weird hearing issues. Sound levels and frequencies that other people hardly even notice can be painful to me. My ENT doc has a name for it?

I've gone through a lot of brands of amp/dac/can combos before discovering the HD650 with proper power can deliver very even sound for me. No, not near as airy sounding as the Grado. The Grado sound isn't strident and painful, but without E Q'ing I have to turn the volume up much higher to get the lower frequencies to bloom. Contrary to what many folks say, Grado's are capable of delivering excellent bass. I simply have to boost it.

The 650's allow me to listen and enjoy at most any volume level without any manipulation. Yea, the denied by many veil is there, but the 650's have managed to hit the sweet spot for me.

I can rock the house without disturbing anyone.

(If I so desire I can still get everyone's attention with the old NAD 150 Watt/channel integrated amp and Def Tech Bipole speakers.)
