My Kind of Gun Shop

Hey, how did you get a photo if my man room?
Jack First had a shop in Lancaster CA and every Sat/Sun I'd stop by. Sadly he sold it and moved out of state. It's not the same now.

There are several references in the book regarding Williams' habit of carrying two 1911's on him at all times and I would think it would be safe to assume this occasion was no exception.

Looks like Williams is wearing an unbuttoned double breasted suit. His slight lean to the right reveals what an old street cop (and any other knowledgable observer) would recognize as an "un-natural protrusion" to the left tail of his coat. I would guess that the object in his left coat pocket approximates the size of a 1911 magazine, too.

Great picture, Charlie.

I have a Ladysmith that Williams reportedly modified for his girlfriend. The barrel was shortened and the hammer was bobbed. I even have the barrel piece that was cut off with the original front sight. He was quite a character.

Williams Gun Sight in Lapeer, MI (downstate) looks quite a bit like that now.
Didn't see any FA stuff but lots of everything else.

Wow.... I remember that place. I moved from Michigan 32 years ago. My grandparents lived off Davison Rd in Lapeer!

I sure would be fun to jump in a time machine with a roll of $100 bills and clean that place out.

Reminds me of the story about the guy going into a grocery store in a small town and seeing an old fashioned candy counter. After spending about five dollars on a bunch of penny candy he told the owner he didn't know when he had had so much fun. The owner replied "Try coming in with just one penny". I can remember Mortenson's Sporting Goods in Rockford looking a lot like that, and I didn't have ten dollars to buy the cheapest thing in there.

Actually, that is Lee Jarrett standing in Mike Priwer's living room right after WWII. I don't know who all those other guys are.

It's the big one Liz'beth!!! I'm comin' ta join ya!!!!!! Oh Lawdy!!!!!!!

That's Hy Hunter's Gun Emporium, Burbank California, circa mid-1950's (long since defunct).

Hy was involved with Great Western Arms and heavily marketed their products in his catalog. Here's a few photos of the 1956 edition, along with a couple of shameless photos of my GWA SAA.

If you're ever in Hutchinson, KS, go south across the river bridge to South Hutchinson and check out Shooter's Supply at 6th and Main. Same type of store. Its been there a little less than 50 years. Lots of goodies!

You need to scan more pages of that catalog onto the forum. That thing isn't the holy bible, but its got to be pretty close.

There is this little surplus store/gunshop in pekin Illinois that to me has that old time gunshop feel to it.

MacKey's Landing in Jamesville, NC. Its a more modern version of the old time shop but they claim one of the biggest, if not the biggest gun shop in the world. I go there once a year, bought a few things but most is priced at what you would expect.

Not quite as large, or as many guns, but Freddie Bear Sports in Tinley Park, IL has a little bit of that atmosphere. I work there part time and get paid to talk about one of my favorite subjects (guns, of course).

Fantastic picture!
Ordnanceguy, I hope you don't mind. I thought this picture was so cool I copied it and shared it in the Lounge at the coltforum :)

That pile of single actions on the countertop is crazy!

Chad, I have the same old book. Did you see the advertisement of the dude (I believe his name was Medley) with his design for the holster in his pants? It must have been the original Thunderwear.:D

My eye was drawn to the gun rigs, belts & holsters hanging up on the right.
ordnanceguy & I spent part of an evening 45 years ago with our noses pressed up against a window in Douglas, Wyoming. The gun shop was closed for the night by the time we got to town & we left the next morning before it opened-we weren't old enough to determine the schedule.Single actions, Winchesters,M-1 Garands & S&W's were hanging up & displayed in glass cases, Western memorabilia covered the walls-just like the photo Charlie posted to start this trip down memory lane.
"What a long strange trip it's been..."
Regards,
