My new .44 Mag S&W 629-4 Mountain Gun...!

I have been wanting a 629, pre Cinton. I got tired of looking and bought a 68 Super Blackhawk, then one came up locally for $650. SBH is good too.

I would have thought Hogue would be a better grip then wood. But I have never shot those style of wood grips.

I am a little surprised at 300grn for bears. I would have expected 240-260. But I don't really know. I carry 3.5" 44spcl with Buffalo Bore 240grn. But also want a 629.

I just started reloading. There is a cost savings on 44 rounds. Especially 44 special which is hard to find.

For practice, I would go with cowboy loads of mag. I would think they would be cheaper. Since magnum is more common. Plus people say spcls can leave carbon build up mag guns.

I would be interested in any links of carrying in bear country or loads.

Hey... you live in So Cal. What bears? Cal Bears, the football team? jk I hiked the Rockies for 17 years and never worried about bears or cats. It was people you had to watch out for in the Natl Forests.
I agree, it's the people in the Nat'l Forests that are a greater danger. I bought this MG for fun and will experiment with a variety of loads. When I venture into bear country I'll be taking it with as backup to my 375 H&H. ;)

Gaijin - Thanks for the explanation on your Herrett grips. I'm 6'1 and lean, so probably have regular sized hands as well.

New question for anyone - For those using fiber optic sights on MGs, are you just swapping out the front sight and what brand is best to get?

Thanks!
Eric

Have you had a chance to shoot that MG yet? You may find that the grips on it work for you. I found a 629-1 in 3" and I was sure it was going to slap me around when I fired it with Magnum loads in it. When I fired it I was very pleased. It shot like hot 44spls. It is really a fun gun to shoot.

Cobrad - The MGs are calling your name....! ;)

SmithMarine - A lot of folks really like the Jordan Troopers. I'm wondering how those grips would stack up against the Shooting Master grips. I'll have to give Herretts a call maybe and discuss. Real world experience/input is very much appreciated. Thanks!

Eric
Well I do have large hands and the set of Troopers I have on my 686 served well on the job in the 80's. I found no need to shift hand position when going from single to double action as someone mentioned. They also caused the gun to sit well and point naturally. I could do rapid accurate DA without the gun shifting around, Shooting masters are just enough different that I did not care for them. The Jordan Troopers were designed by Jordan, (who I met) for combat, not target shooting. Whichever you get, just be sure you DO NOT get them with checkering, especially in 44 magnum. The smooth grips will fill you hand without chewing it up.

WOW, nice S&W 629-4 Mountain Gun in .44 Mag.
That's one on my "HAVE TO GET" list, it will have plenty of family members ---------- (-;

I like mine.

Tom - I haven't shot it yet but hope to do so this weekend. The Tamer grips may work just fine. I expect I'll be using them for awhile until I get used to the gun. I may buy some wood grips and switch it up just to see the difference. You never know until you try.

SmithMarine - Good input and I'll check out the Jordan Troopers as well. Good tip on not getting checkering.

Cactus Jack - Can you tell me more about your front sights? Nice looking gun!!

Thanks!
Eric

So you're the one that snagged that 629 off CalGuns.net :) Congrats!

Have a 629-4. Mountain Gun.

Really enjoy it with cast bullets at 950 fps or so.

They are a handful when fed hot loads.

I like the 4" guns, had a pair of -2 mountain revolvers years ago, wish I still had one, might have to get one again but these will do for now

Not Calguns, 24hourcampfire.com. I really lucked out getting this gun. I saw someone else snag it within minutes of it being posted in the classifieds, and I sent him a message saying I'll pay $50 over what he paid anytime he wants to sell it. I got a message a few months later when he needed the cash. These MGs don't come around too often, especially pre lock -4s.

My next challenge was getting it into CA since it's not on the approved handgun list. Calguns was a huge help and I had it converted to single action temporarily and then reconverted back after the transfer. PITA, but well worth it!

NEED??

First post here.
You guys are killing me with this Mountain Gun stuff!
A client offered to trade me one with 20 rounds through it for a used big game rifle but I don't have any I would trade off. I've been resisting the urge to buy a new one for him.
I bought a FA 454 Casull last summer to replace the .44 I sold a couple years ago, but I really love the .44. My last one was a Dan Wesson and my using load was 325 gr hardcast over 22 gr. H110. I used it to kill a B&C black bear. Two shots at the point of the right shoulder as he faced me were both recovered under the hide behind the left hind quarter Those bullets penetrated a solid 4' of bear.
I still have several S&W's and really (don't) NEED a Mtn. Gun!

It has nothing to do with it.

I have several Smith&Wesson/Colt 44Mags.

Had a chance to buy the 629 MG and jumped on it.

Have a 45 ACP MG and have lusted after a 44 Mag for several years.

They seem to be kinda hard to find. Those that have them are KEEPING them.

Great gun:D
