A personal experience with meters. The chief of a LEO drug enforce found a grow house by checking electricity usage on a suspected location. Black plastic blocked all windows and grow lights and hydroponic water system spun the meter 24/7. Was allowed to go go on hit by Sherrif Dept and state revenue dept. What an operation. Remote meter reading told what they needed to get warrant.

Yes, terrible, and I hear they've fired all the elevator operators in NYC too. Next thing you know the grocery stores will make us check out our own groceries so they can fire the cashiers.

Cashiers may be ok but I hope they don't get rid of the grocery clerks.

My local grocery store insists on doing some pee-a-boo product placements and the more insidious, hide-and-seek isle 'refresh', about every 4-6 months.

Even now I have problems finding products, I know where they were there last week but after their periodic experiment in product placement, I have to track down a local "stock guide" with special knowledge of the current layout, to help me locate what I need.

I hear that you can email your grocery list to the store and somehow the stuff is sitting by the door waiting for you. If they do get rid of the stock clerks, I guess some form of AI thinking machine will be able to get what I ordered.
I hope not, I an not that organized.

Ours were swapped 5-6-7 years ago. No disruption and that's out in the rural. Water is also telemetered.

Why are people freaking out about the ability of some Smart Meters to be turned off remotely ? There is no incentive for power companies to just randomly cut your power . They are in the business to sell electricity . Some times , especially with small Co-Ops , there is a need to cut " Peak Demand " in order to prevent a penalty from their wholesale provider .

Well speaking for me its just more control that others have over you is not a comfortable feeling. Hacking could also come into play. There are people, groups and countries out there that could would do that. Remember the hospital computer systems that were held for serious ransom by these type people? It does happen!
