I live in NC and I occassionally make the drive up to the Harrah's Casino in Cherokee. I am a CCW permit holder and I might have carried when I have traveled up there but not in the casino if I had carried. At a match this weekend a CCW instructor said it is against Cherokee law to even bring a gun on the reservation without permission. I have never heard that before and I searched the internet and I can not find any information on it. My CCW instructor never mentioned it and I have lived in NC my whole life and I have never heard that. I am planning a trip in April and I will call the Sherrif's office in Cherokee to be sure but in the mean time has anybody heard about this in NC or any other reservation? I am also planning a trip to some western states in May Colorado,Utah, Arizona to name a few states and some of my travels might take me through some reservations. I have not traveled out of the state since getting my permit and I plan to check the state laws of the states I will be driving through but if what the guy said is true I will need to make sure what tribal laws are as well. Thanks guys.

Best would be to contact tribal LEO make sure you ask for code so you can check it out your self "lawfully authorized" could be a grey area...Remember they can do what they want and you have to try to make it right, I've heard stories of confiscation and cost more to get it back then just buying another they have their own laws they go by..

That was the only thing I could find. For NC the "lawfully authorized" was not clear. I will be calling the local LEO before traveling I was just surprised this is the first I've heard of it.

I called today and the guy was mistaken you can legally carry concealed in Cherokee with a valid CCW. Good to know.

Just out of curiosity who did you call the tribal police? They are the one you really need the info from and get a name and ordinance number if you can, could save you a lot of problems. I went to Cherokee a year ago and didn't carry because of the I wasn't sure either.

If you're on a smartphone I'd suggest recording the call. Just tell him you are unsure of the laws and are recording the call for future reference. The only reason I say that is that my boss called the tribal police and asked, they told him to place it in the open with the bolt removed and not within the same reach. So hd put the bolt in his toolbox in the back. He got stopped at a sobriety checkpoint and they confiscated his gun. He told them he had called and was instructed to do as he did and they said they had never heard of such a thing. He ended up in court and it was his word against theirs. Guess who won.

Yes I called the Tribal Police and talked to detective. He said I would not have any problems as long as I have my permit. He also said you can carry on the Parkway now with a CCW.

You mentioned travelling to or through reservations out west:

I saw a TV program a year or so ago that was a real life thing and the subject was tribal law.

I forget the state, but it was one of the far western states. The reservation cops were stopping cars and confiscating weapons that would have been legal anywhere else in the state.

So apparently there is so much variation in tribal law from one reservation to another that you need to check on each and every one.

After 56 years of travelling for a living, I have no intention of going that far from the house so I did not save any links.

I plan to do just that. We haven't nailed down our travel plans yet because the weather will be a factor. As soon as plans are set I will plan the route accordingly and check each area we travel to be safe.
