Need help...is this normal???

First post here...
I am looking to buy a 629-3 Classic DX from an auction and have a question. The owner says it has low mileage . The gun looks great in every picture EXCEPT this one. I did a little research and have read that the extractor on these models are hand fit. I am not an expert by any means and am new to revolvers but this pic looks funky to me. Can someone enlighten me...this looks chewed up and nasty.

I'm not an expert but I just went and looked at mine after seeing your picture and none of mine look like that, mine all have crisp and clean edges, definitely something going on their, I'm sure somebody will be along in a minute and have a definite answer.

Do either of you guys have the round style extractor like in my photo or is it more like a star shape? The round ones are supposed to have "fitted" pads and the later "star" shaped ones are supposed to be machined. I am new to all this so forgive me for my ignorance. Either way this doesn't look right to me...

It looks like the extractor stood proud of the rear of the cylinder and someone has dressed it flat using a file. It is not normal.

It isn't unusual for an extractor to be a little high, or low, by just a few thousandths from the rear face of the cylinder.

The extractor on my 5" 629-3 Classic DX is the same style as yours but mine is much more nicely machined. The machining lines around the rear face of your cylinder look more coarse than mine, too.

If I were interested in this gun, I would advise the seller of my interest and if necessary, buy it pending the result of an inquiry to Smith & Wesson. If they will bring that area up to their standard for that model at no charge, the rest of the gun is nice and the price is fair, I would buy it. If not, well, I guess it would depend upon how badly I wanted it.

Thanks for the input so far guys...just by what has been said so far Im most likely gonna pass on this...I want a perfect gun to start, not have to have it fixed etc...the price was a little too good to be true and now I have an idea why. There are too many nicer ones out there for me to have to settle on this...

Who cares....why buy into a problem gun once owned by bubba? He made a wise choice in passing on it.

The price was 675 plus shipping and it came with a Bushnell Holosight. mount and Bomar silhouette sights, no original sights.
I was gonna use the Holosight for my AR and figured it was a good deal all around , but there will be others...I'm not in a rush!

I've seen quite a few "N" Frames in the mid 90's that came from the factory looking like that. I bought a couple of them NIB and sent them back under warranty and S&W repaired them.
