Stopped by my LGS this afternoon, and he had a
model 29-2 it was a blued with a 6.5"bbl, it looked
to be unfired (no disernable turn line), and came
with the mahogany blue lined presentation case
with tools and papers
(all were in great condition).
The dealer thought it was made before '76.

I haven't really looked at S&W 29's before,
but it caught my eye, because it was in
such fine condition.

I'd sure like to get some feedback on what a
decent price would be for a 29-2 like that.

You have asked a tough question: A- The shape of the case, liners and box, check hinges and clasp. B- Condition of the 29, turn line and flame cutting, and any other bluing issues, sights & stocks. C- How bad you want it. D- What you can afford. E- The fact that it is a 6.5. F- How good are you at haggling? Sounds like a nice item! The last one that I bought fitting the description you have presented was $950, and wasn't in pristine condition.

Thanks for your comments they are much appreciated.
The wood case is in excellent shape,
as are both liners, hinges and the clasp.

You refer to a box, but there is only the case.
I asked if there was a cardboard box,
but was told there is only the
presentation case, tools and papers.
It has no turn line to speak of, no flame cutting
and no bluing issues...I would consider the gun
and case pristine or very close to it!

Is the 6.5"bbl a plus or minus?
I was looking though the photo thread of 29's here,
and it might be a 6"bbl...
I'll have to call and check on that.

I have it on hold, I think I can
get it for about $850, and possibly
a bit less with some haggling.

Thoughts please.

The premium for the 6.5" is due to the "Dirty Harry" effect, and the price quoted is pretty good for the whole unfired package.

Thanks...I looked in the Bluebook and the M29-2
is listed as coming with 4", 6-1/2" or 8-3/8" barrels,
did they also make some 29-2's with a 6" bbl?

Yes, they are actually less common than the 6.5", but they don't seem to make anyone's day :) .

29-2 Made my day!

Well this made my day, I went back to the LGS
and made the deal. It is a 6.5" bbl and unfired.

I gave $825 OTD for it, and I'll pick it up Saturday.
Hope the weather here in the midwest co-operates!

Thanks to everyone for all your comments and feedback.

I'll post pics of it over the weekend.

Congratulations! As you describe the gun, that is a very good price; I wish I ran into deals like that...

Are you going to shoot it, or stuff it in the safe, and admire it every once in a while...?

Thanks...I'm not 100% sure yet, but I'm leaning towards
keeping it as is for right now.

Mine has seen more use , has box with homemade liner and I consider it worth 1000.00 but it is not for sale. 6 1/2 " is what Dirty Harry and I made cool.

very nice indeed...i purchased my 6.5" with case new in 1976 it was all of $350 which was a lot....i still have it and it has served me well...hope all that snow i'm seeing on the news doesn't mess up your pickup....looking foward to pics!

Thanks Kenny...right now I'm sitting in the kitchen listening to the howling wind, which is blowing the snow sideways!

Hard to tell how many inches we have gotten already, since it is drifting! This is the light stuff the heavier snowfall is supposed to come later.

I'm hoping on Saturday I can make the pickup, and I'll sure post pics!

sounds like a good price on a sweet package. i am looking forward to pics when you pick it up, but be careful out in the blizzard!

It truly was a blizzard last night and into the morning hours.

I just got back from running to the store,
and right now it is sunny and 31 degrees.
There was snow piled everywhere,
some piles 8' or more high, but there
is some melting in the sun!

Also saw 3 huge snow plows traveling 3 abreast,
clearing a main road, pretty impresive,
and something you lucky warm
climate folks don't get to see! LOL Lucky me!

Sky is clear...now the cold front moves in,
and the high forecasted for tomorrow is
less than 10 degrees! Brrrrrrr

Good news is, that the roads will
most likely be clear for
the pick up!
