I am looking to buy a model 15-4 38 with 4" barrel, nickel finish. he doesn't know the date manufactured and don't want to send me the ser# and says this is the only pic he has. I wanting to know what is a fair price for this. I know I don't have much to go on but any help would be appreciated.

Hard to know much about condition from your photo. The aftermarket grips are a negative for me.

Without better photos, $300 - $350

The pic would not open for me. If the gun checks out mechanically, I would pay $350 for it. I have a 67 no dash (stainless 15) They are quality guns, and good shooters. Let us know how you make out! Bob

Is that nickel? Terrible pic. Definitely see wear on the barrel and what looks like a little rust on the sideplate.

Seller's incapable or unwilling to provide more pictures? Red flag. Will you be able to look this piece over in person before buying?

You can tell the seller all he needs to give you is the first four (or even three) on the serial to get the date if he's concerned.

Is the seller offering a three day inspection period with full refund? If he won't, I wouldn't touch this one -- there are way too many quality 15s out there at reasonable prices to fuss with difficult or dubious sellers.

From what I can see in the pic, I'd pass on it. The grips, rust on side plate as Hapworth stated. It looks to have a spot on the barrel also. The other could look worse.

The S&W 15-4 was produced from 1977 until around 1982 when the pinned barrel was eliminated and the model became the 15-5.

I would thank him for his time and keep on looking.
