Need to replace a Bobbed hammer.

I have a chance to pick up a 70's model 60 in .38 spl.

It was a BUG for a older LEO. The rest of the gun is of course in fantastic shape but the hammer was bobbed. I can grab it with my thumb and finger and thumb as if i wanted to fire it in SA so it was not made DAO.

I cannot live with the Bobbed hammer and I am unsure of what hammer replacement will work in it.

So super newb question here. Will any J frame hammer work or do I specifically have to find one from that era model 60?

Any help is appreciated.

I don't care for the Bobbed Hammer thing either but there seem be be many members here that do. You could "trade" with someone who wants one and have them send you theirs. Sometimes they fit perfectly and sometimes they don't, but I have had greater luck with J Frames fitting than K's, L's or N's. Do you feel lucky??? If there is someone in your local area that wants to switch hammers that would be a gimmee! Why not post a sign at your local Range or inquire at your LGS or Shooting Club.

If that does not fly, you can still buy them on Fleebay and many of the usual parts sources.

I want to shoot the gun in single action. This inst going to be a carry piece for me.

Just really needing to know if any year of model of J frame hammer would work for this 1977 model.

You would want one of the "Flash Chromed" hammers to properly match. Post a "Wanted to buy" add in that section of the forum. Or, look on Gunbroker parts. You shouldn't have too much difficulty finding one. Most any J Frame hammer would work, but be aware they might need some fitting. Not all are "drop in".

I feel your pain. I walked away from a great buy on a Model 66-2 a couple of months ago that had the hammer and the internals mutilated by bubba.

I must agree with the opinion to keep the bobbed hammer. For several reasons. It will be easier to conceal. It will be less likely to snag on clothing. I had the hammer bobbed on a model 60-9 not long ago. I love it. There really is no need for the hammer spur any way. You don't cock a double action defense revolver. Here's mine. One caveat, if you bob a hammer, let a competent gunsmith do it.

Not all model 60's came with a flash chromed hammer and trigger. I have a 60-7 that came with the color case hardened finish. I bought a bobbed flash chromed hammer for mine. It was a drop-in part. I never really worried that the trigger is a different color.

I feel your pain, bryco. +1 here on strongly disliking a bobbed hammer. I have an intact one waiting to be put on my 60-3 3" as soon as I have the time. Got it on GunBroker - just do a search, at least one will come up. A non-MIM (i.e., forged) hammer will work. It may or may not fit without some extra fit work, so I'd even suggest that if you see a hammer-trigger combo available, you might want to change both, especially if you replace a flashed part with a case-hardened one (so it looks better.) Hammers are usually drop-in IF you use the original DA sear. They are quite often drop-in even if you don't.
