HI
I just ordered a new 686 and I am wondering how the factory sets the sights. I read the manual online but could not find anything on this.

And would the same setting be true for any 686 regardless of production year?

Thanks for the help.

Depends on use. Target = 6 o'clock; Combat = Point of Aim/Point of Impact.

Ahh, so I need to test it out, like so many other things. Got it. I imagine brand of ammunition makes a bit of difference too, as it does with my 22.

Yes. Regardless of the original factory sight settings, the ammunition you use will likely have a different point of impact, requiring sight adjustment anyway. There are other factors too, including how you hold the gun, and how you squeeze the trigger.

The gun comes with adjustable sights so set them for what ever way you like .

6 o'clock ONLY works for round bullseye targets set at the correct yardage for the target. If you don't believe this set your pistol for 6 o'clock on a 25 yard target at 25 yards then switch to a 50 yard target at 25 yards. Using a 6 o'clock on the bigger bullseye will get you low hits. POA = POI works for everything. No matter the size or shape of the target if you are set for 25 yards you will hit where you aim at 25 yards.
My preference is POI=POA but feel free to choose which ever you like.
The real important thing is to shoot and have fun.
