At the local Cabela's, there is a batch of 6946's that have popped up that are marked: "FRPD".

Wondering if anyone knows which Police Dept. the "FR" stands for; salesmen didn't know.

Fort Riley, KS PD is also a possibility. Although a search for FRPD brings up a ton of Fall River hits and only one hit for Fort Riley.

It will be interesting to see if any turn up at dealers here in MA.

There were at least 2 of these that showed up at Cabela's in Columbus, Ohio also...

Along with the 2-6946 ($449), there were 2-5906 ($449) and a 4044 ($399.)

All showed a lot of use as if they were duty guns.

SW 65-2 FRPD Nice condition, $375 in 8/08 It was from Fall River PD, Ma. I will have to check Cabela's. Be Safe,

I suspect Fall River is correct. The "Fort Riley Police Department" consisted of three MP companies and they all carried the M9.

Rereading the article, they were referring to the MPs, not a civilian PD.

While doing some searching around, I did find this,

Fall River Police Department to get new guns - YouTube

This is from sometime last year, so certainly the time frame is correct.

There is a comment in there that the old guns are "two decades old" and being traded back to S&W so that there is no cost to the city.

Fall River has 240 sworn officers, so that's a fair amount of trade ins of various types and vintages.

Sadly, I'll probably never see any around here.

Wow, that's a lot of money for a former police gun with heavy external wear. The 6946 is a fine pistol, however.

I purchased FRPD36 from Cabelas in MN and am very happy with it. Near mint condition. Maybe got lucky and got one that saw desk duty. Yes, prices are not what they were a few years ago, but I have a fine weapon and it's not plastic.;)

I just got a plain one from a GA dealer on Gunbroker. It's a sorta early 6946 (round trigger guard & chromed trigger/hammer) with one magazine.

$290 6946
$15 shipping
$20 transfer

$325 total.

I picked up a few extra mags on the forum and I have several 5900 mags as backups.

I like the DAO S&W pistols

I had a 5946 & have a 3953. I like the slick slide devoid of safety levers and the consistent trigger pull. I do wish the guns had the repeat pull feature, like my three Sig DAO pistols. That said, DAO is not very popular in my area and such guns are hard to resell. I would avoid putting a huge amount of money into a DAO pistol for that reason.

I like my 3953 way more than my 3913 & recently acquired Shield. My two Glock 26's and Sig P228 hardly get handled, much less carried, anymore.

Here is a 6946 police trade that I bought for 278.00 + shipping.
I wish I had bought two at the time. I lost the first one to a grandson.:)

F.R.P.D 80 from Cabela's in MN for $469. Best one they had and the only
one at that price, others were $449. Shortly after receiving I ordered a
new set of factory grips and (2) mags from Brownell's which surprisingly
were in stock given the time-frame:

Thank you all for the replies. I looked at several at Cabela's, but bought one on Gunbroker; even with the shipping & transfer fees, I got it for $66.00 less.....

Mine looks like one of the Desk Duty guns; I could easily believe that it was never fired for more than a qualification (if that). I replaced the Hogue rubber grip with the original, and have put at least 200 rounds through it already.

The most surprising thing to me is that I shoot it better than I do my 3953...and I don't have large hands; I guess it is just right, for me, and will likely become my daily carry gun.

Funny too, is that when I was young & knew everything, I absolutely could not stand the feel of the plastic grips on the 3rd generation pistols; now, however, they just seem to feel right, and I now have more 3rd generation pistols than anything else, even though I still prefer to shoot 1911's......

I bought 6946 marked "FRPD 280" about 6 months ago from a fellow on GB that had approximately 30 of them for sale. They were all unfired, without the box and with only 1 magazine - you could buy additional magazines from him.

Mine is perfect. I do not think that it had been issued for use. I think I paid about $430 for the pistol, but I don't remember exactly.
