Certain recent events that hit close to home have made me a lot more aware of what happens during an exchange of gunfire. One of these things is being able to charge a semi auto pistol one handed.
The more I thought about it the more it made sense to swap the stock rear sight on my Shield to one that I can manipulate the slide one handed, using whatever is available ie, shoe, corner of a desk, steering wheel, tree or whatever I can push against. You never know when one arm will be left useless for whatever reason.
You see, this past August my son was the victim of a home invasion/robbery and was shot in his strong arm leaving it useless. He spent almost 3 weeks in the hospital and survived but still doesn't have the use of that arm. Hopefully one day he'll regain it's use but it's going to take time and lots of therapy.
When looking for one, I found out that there's not a ton of squared off rear sights available. Sure, they are out there but just not as many like regular tapered sights.
I didn't have any particular brand in mind but ended up going with Dawson's Charger rear sight in all black. I also looked hard at the similar 10-8 U Notch rear but wasn't sure if I would like the U notch. Another thing I'm switching to is an all black rear, without dots, but still use my front fiber optic. The reason for an all black rear is that I've read where it's a lot easier for my older eyes to pick up the front sight.
If the new Charger sight works out for me, I'll install one on my son's gun.
Have any of you changed your rear sights to the one like I have described? How has it worked out for you?
