I just traded for a S&W 6690 9mm . I really like this gun , it shoots and carries well. I have read that this is a transitional model. I have the original box and it is in great shape. My question is "Should i put this gun up and buy a 6906 ?" I would shoot it quite a bit and carry it often. I just don't want to ruin any collectors value that it might have. thanks JJ

If you like the feel and the way the gun shoots, then I would say keep it. You can always add a 6906 in the future, but I wouldn't trade away or sell a gun I was comfortable with and functioned well.

Use it,take care of it, and enjoy it.Don't worry about what the next guy might,or might not, pay for it.

It's been my experience, as a knife collector, that if you are worried about ruining the value of something you should sell it and buy something you will use.

With a safe full of high end knives that had never cut anything. I just snapped. Sold off everything that I wouldn't use.

Life is too short to die with a safe full of unused stuff.

My advice. Shoot it or sell it for something you will shoot.

In the end it's the times shooting you will remember.

Just my 2 cents.

wow....AMEN! words of passion if I've ever heard them

Thanks for all of the responses . My question is do you think the 6690 's value would be enough that i should put it up and save it. I got a really good deal on it before i found out that it is a transitional model. I mean if it is gonna be worth double what i have in it then i will put it in the safe and pick up another 6906 to shoot. if the value isnt much more than a regular 6906 then i will not worry about it. JJ

If I'm reading this correctly it means it is not new in box. Even thought they are quiet scarce and would be of more value to a collector than a 6906, it won't have the same value as it would if it were NIB.

I'd shoot it but I doubt I'd make it my daily carry.

+1 with Heavy Hog.
Shoot it,
If you really want it put somewhere safe I still have room in my Browning Safe for it.
I shoot a 669 and it became my CCW pistol. Nothing about it not to like. Your 6690 is perfect for use as well.

I think what we all missed here, especially me, was the basic question.

The gun he has is collectible.

So, should he, speaking dollars and cents now, save it to sell at a later time for a profit? or if it is not really worth that much, use it and not worry that he is ruining a collectors item.

Is that right jjwestbrook?

I get it. I really do.

If I found a knife at a flea market and later discoverd that it was a one of a kind, super awesome, never to made again blade...I would have asked the same question.

I do not know about a dollar value, but there are a LOT more 6906's than there are 6690's. I happen to own a 6690, and I keep it in my safe. I also own a 6906 and 6904. I would carry either of those before the 6690. I will put it like this, if the 6690 is your only CCW, I would use it. But if you can easily afford to buy a 6906 in addition to the 6690, I would carry the 6906 and leave the 6690 in the safe. JMO

I think that is good advice. I've got a 30-year-old N Frame with fixed sights that has never been fired-- I think it is time to let it go to a "real" collector-- or someone who will enjoy it more than I do. There are a lot of things I can get to actually shoot.

Yes, maybe we've missed the point, but on the other hand - what's collectible about a M669(0)?
It's a run of the mill second generation gun, not highly sought after - unless someone can tell me where the pent up demand is for this gun.

As for "collectible" meaning a NIB gun versus a used gun, I'll give you that - a NIB gun will always bring a premium, albeit in this case a slight premium.

Collectible guns are interesting, but ultimately there has to be a reason for what is "collectible" about it. I'm not dissing this gents gun, but please - help me here - what is collectible about a M669(0)??

There needs to be some underlying reason, highly sought after due to performance, scarcity (low quantity), maybe even someone notable may have owned this particular gun.... but in the end there needs to be a reason for assigning "collectible" to something and a run-of-the-mill second gen S&W auto, by itself, isn't a reason, IMO.

This being one of the "transition" guns might sound interesting to the small quantity of S&W auto collectors, but the total quantity of these versus the "of interest" crowd outweighs that.

Right. :D

That's the kind of debate we need to help jjwestbrook out.

I actually have nothing of value to add though...I am just a S&W noob. :o

thanks to everyone who expressed an opinion.
I believe this gun is too good of a shooter to keep locked up in the safe. now if it had been worth double what i paid , that would be a different story. Thanks JJ

I bought a couple of guns from a good friend and dealer. Limited edition springfield being one of them. When I told my buddy how well it shoots he was like WHAT ! You shot it? My reply was simply, Its not collectable until its worn out and no longer shoots good;). Now when I look at pistols he thinks are collectable he ask me first Are you going to shoot it?

I am posting this here because I cant seem to get to the lounge or much of any where else. i keep getting the Internet Explorer can't display the web page. Any one else having trouble? Or is it my worn out old Lap Top?
