new to the forum, check out this 1006

hi all,
new to S&W forum, just wanted to share my first ever s&w pistol, picked this up at local pawn shop for $300.
i always wanted a 10mm, and while this one is rough, i think it will do. my plan was to send it out for hard chrome refinish at accurate plating, but thinking about a black finish also. opinions? year of mfg? as far as my limited research goes, i think it is a '90 mfg.

Knock off the rust....keep it oiled and shoot the heck out of it.

You won't have to worry about scratches.

That looks like blood stains to me.......I would get a steel toothbrush for most of it, then one of those pads...cant remember the name right now....it will look like new....for $300- you did better than great!

if it shoots well you got a bargain...I agree with above posts...try cleaning it up yourself first and see how it looks...there are a lot of posts on here to help you

Great buy, but I would look at that as a refinish project too. Since, to my knowledge, there are no factory black 1006s I'd look at a nice black finish over chrome.

Great buy on a great gun. Polish it up a bit and then see if it needs to be sent out to some one. All black stainless 1006 would be sharp. Best of luck and enjoy that new toy.

I agree that the rust looks like dried blood. When I was assigned to our Ballistics Unit, we had quite a few "suicide pieces" that bore a similar resemblance to your 1066. After the gun takes its final shot, it would inevitably fall either on the person or close enough to the body that it would get leaked on. Our clean up procedure included a gun bath in bleach prior to examining it. Good luck with your refinish. I think it will look great when it is done.

I agree could be blood the bleach sounds like a good idea as if it is you don't know what is in it if it is blood. Depends where they shot themselves at if, it is a suicide gun. My SIL used a .357 that was also used by her father so it had two but wasn't that bad. Don't let it bother you if it was won't be any ghost in there. Not original, but not much you can do to make it close, so you could also Durakote or Cerakote coat it any color you want. Good luck.

order some aervoe military grade spray paint

degrease your piece completely and mask the sights.

paint to your taste

Wow, just wow. I was at a gun show today and the cheapest I saw a 1006 was $1050. You picked up a great deal. $300 even in that condition is just obscene.

You did good on the price. If you live around Atlanta, GA I have access to a bead blast machine that will clean that gun up real fast. If not, then careful application of a Scotch Brite pad should clean up the stainless steel, a brass brush on the sights then maybe some cold blue.

This S&W 64-2 looked nastier than your 1006 when I got it. A former LE evidence gun, it was in a cardboard box covered in rusty blue and nickel guns. I used Scotch Brite pads on it as it was a weekend and I had no access to the bead blast machine.

I have a S&W 1006 myself, you will love it...except for carrying it. It is heavy.

How are the internal parts? If they are OK, you should be able to fix the exterior. The thread has some interesting information and there are several people here who have done some nice restoration work on their 3rd generation guns.

You'll find, as I did, that there are some incredibly well informed and helpful people on this forum. That includes at least one factory trained armorer.

Strip that bad boy down to the bare frame and slide and have it bead blasted. Go over the pieces parts best you can and reblue them. I think you might be surprised how well it turns out. Good buy. I would have been all over that one too.

wow, thanks for all the replies. i havnt had a chance to take it down, just sprayed it liberally with clp. maybe after football, i'll have a chance to get into it. i do plan to get the rust off there, see how it shoots. if it runs good (and i think it will), i'm really thinking about a black finish. i will add more pics when cleaned up.

That looks like it was dug up from a shallow grave!! Like Timex watches they take a lickin' and keep on tickin'..
It will work just as is... I would bet. But I would clean it up anyway. It looks great though as is!

Since you are not in a hurry to use it, pull the stocks off, strip it, and soak the entire thing in Kano Kroil. Loosens rust, doesn't hurt anything.

Great find for $300 even with the rust. I love my 1006 and you should enjoy yours. I would have to do some kind of finish myself neglect like that hurts my feelings. It should clean up nice though. It could look cool in black. Keep us posted.
