New Veterinarian

Congratulations on the new vet bluetopper. Unfortunately, I am pet free now, and most likely will stay that way. My family started going to my favorite vet when he had just graduated, and I was a teen. He was smart and able to buy a building, and start his business. We took our family pets there, and I took mine there when I had my own "hunting pets". This fellow had a small practice where he was the only vet. It was just him, a receptionist, and a vet tech. He didn't do appointments unless surgery was scheduled, you just showed up when needed. When I was old enough to be the paying person, I appreciated his reasonable prices. Of course by then, I'm sure he owned his building free and clear. He wasn't one to "keep up with the Jone's" meaning he didn't feel the need to remodel every year, so his business was pretty plain.

About 6-7 years ago, he retired and sold his business. The new vets were fairly young, probably out of school for 10 years. The new business went from 3 folks to 10. There were 2 vets, 2 receptionists, 4 vet techs, and 2 groomers. They also completely remodeled the building, and saw you only by appointment. Subsequently, the prices more than doubled!

I only went there about a year or two because my 2 dogs were 10 and 14 years old when they took over, and only lived 2 more years. About 6 months ago, I drove by the old building and noticed a for sale sign out front, and 2 miles down the road was a brand spanking new building with their name on it.

I guess business is booming, and as much as I miss my dogs, I'm glad that I don't have to pay the high prices for everything involved. I know, I know……….GET OFF MY LAWN!! I admit that I'm a grumpy old codger.👍

I wanted to be a vet, but due to my endless illnesses due to lack of sleep (I don't know how people who work days can stay alive) made school a nightmare I just wanted out of when I graduated HS. I did go to college at night, but never graduated. The only way I could have become a vet was to go to school in the Caribean for a while, and then try to get into a school here. But it never happened, the thought of going to school in the daytime was a horror I never wanted to go through again. Probably a good thing as the last time I worked days I fell asleep twice while driving home. The first time was scary enough, but the second time was only about 2 minutes later. How I could be scared as bad as I was the first time and then fall asleep again was nuts. The first time I almost ran into a railroad overpass, and the second time I went through a green light at one of the busiest intersections in the county. I nearly fell asleep again as I turned onto my street. At that point, I said, "Never again!". A friend's daughter and her husband recently purchased a practice out West, it seems to be going well. I was hoping she stayed in the Toledo area, as she has some crazy ability to find out what a dog is hurting from. And since I've known her since the day she was born, a nice discount would be nice too.

Neither of those facts escaped my attention...To boot she also graduated from the toughest, and arguably finest learning institution in the country......Ben

I agree 100% Ben. Being an Aggie vet is a lot to live up to. Although at her graduation ceremony the Dean of the vet school told them they were better trained and more qualified to step right in and go to work than any class of the past in their storied history.
