Next gun?

Not sure where you guys are getting your Glock 19s and J frames, but there is a considerable difference in size between mine. And the 19 is like a brick in width.

Dimensions:
Firearm--Glock 19--S&W442
Height---4.99"------4.21"
Width----1.18"------1.31"
Length---7.36"------6.50"

This is with boot grips. Note the J-frame is only roughly 3/4" smaller in height and length. If grips that cover the backstrap and extend below the grip frame are chosen (E.g. Pachmayr), they are practically the same size.

The shape of the revolver really does lend itself better to staying unnoticed, even when printing.

I'm only taking from my experience with my model 36 snubby. I'll take some pics of them when I get home but when you put one on top of the other they are the same size, more or less. That is to say they take up the same space. Of course the grip angles are different. The glock is more an L shape though. However, the cylinder on the 36 makes it just as thick.

When comparing compact guns, those above differences are huge -- .78in and .86in.

To put things in perspective, that's a bigger difference than between the Glock 17 and 19. The 19 is .59in less in length and .44in less in height than the 17. Yet that is the difference between a "Compact" and a "Standard" Glock.

I think that the most important thing to remember is INDECISION IS THE KEY TO FLEXIBILITY. You are obviously going to end up with more guns than I have, but it's going to take a few years. However, if you religiously follow some states' mandate of one gun a month, it won't even take a decade.

If you like Glocks, you should certainly buy one, but, depending on what you might expect to encounter when woods-walking, you might want to look into a little more penetration than a man-stopper 9mm load. A .357 is a good choice and can probably be carried about as easily as a Glock. Glocks are also available in 10mm, if that still feels good in your hand (both before and after firing).

If you are going to end up carrying two guns, capacity is less of a consideration.

Have fun! And try not to buy and sell.

This is about the best I could do putting one on top of the other. 642/19. The pic looks like the 642 is forward but it isn't. The muzzles are even.

Right! While there is no back part to your 642 it still takes up the same space iwb. Also my 36 is about as heavy as the G19.

The 19 should weigh about a quarter pound more empty than your 36.
I pocket carry. The 19 is simply not a pocket gun by any measure, but the 642 will fit that role.
Both are great guns... eh... the LCP is the one that gets carried most all the time.:D

Great picture--worth a thousand words of me trying to explain what I mean. I own both, carry both, and I think the difference is not as much as it is sometimes thought to be.

Here's my S&W442 with Hogue Centennial Tamer grips--they cover the full backstrap and add just enough room for a pinky; feel and look great in my opinion. I even think the increased dimensions are worth it--they add 0.41" to the bottom and a tiny bit on the backstrap. (Maybe 0.125"?)

personally i carry a mod. 638 but if you want the magnum the 649 is real nice i like the ability to cock the hammer if i want. can't beat a hump-back

At the moment I do not have a next gun on my list. Last weekend I ordered a Mossberg 930 JM pro 24 inch and I hope to have it in my hands by the end of the week.

Option 2 - There isn't anything like a S&W .357 Magnum.

My next gun will probably be a S&W Model 38/638/649, although the temptation of a 4 inch S&W Heavy Duty would be hard to resist.
